That's right, we've been working on JRuby for over 20 years. My work is now funded by JRuby support contracts via @HeadiusEnts and GitHub Sponsorships (github.com/sponsors/headius). Partner with me to keep this crazy dream alive!
@headius I've been getting into reading ancient Ruby mailing lists and found this for JRuby 20 years ago today 😁 marc.info/?l=ruby-talk&m=116…

I am excited to announce I will be speaking at XO Ruby in NYC this Friday, October 10th, at the Metropolitan Pavilion! XO Ruby events are focused on local Ruby communities, with a dirt cheap, one day, single track setup. Stop by and learn about JRuby!

We're happy to announce jruby-rack 2.0.0, updating our servlet/rack bridge to support the Jakarta Servlet API! We partnered with JRuby contributor github.com/chadlwilson and the @killbill_io Open Source billing and payments platform to make this happen.

I've pushed a Rails 8.1-compatible activerecord-jdbc-adapter 81.0.pre1 for JRuby + SQLite and it can at least CRUD a scaffold app! I've provided a template here for generating a new app:
(rails new -m <template>)

Top three questions I got at #railsworld:
Q: Does Rails work on JRuby?
A: Yes, for 20 years now.
Q: Didn't JRuby already solve this?
A: Yes.
Q: Why aren't you speaking here?
A: I tried. Ask the organizers.

Hello #railsworld! I'm here at the event running office hours and teaching people how to run Rails on JRuby. Find me in the vendor pavilion and grab a sticker!

It's incredible the amount of hacking required to get Rails to run in parallel with Ractors (and it still isn't there yet) when JRuby has been running Rails in parallel for decades. #railsworld

JRuby 10.0.7.0 is released! JRuby 10.0 is our stable line, receiving only bug and security fixes and critical performance improvements. This release tidies up another round of compatibility issues and updates a few standard libraries.

JRuby 10.1.2.0 is released! JRuby 10.1 is our edge line, with more aggressive performance work and refactorings. This release improves perf of Ruby classes that extend Java, startup time on MacOS, and includes many stdlib updates.

Would you buy JRuby swag to help fund the project? We recently did a run of JRuby "bird" t-shirts that have been very popular, but that stuff is expensive to give away for a little startup like ours.

I recently had a nice chat with @eSquareDesign about the past, present and future of JRuby... including some myth debunking that might help Ruby folks look past the "J" to the amazing tech underneath. Check out the video here:

And thanks to JRuby friend @cglee I now also have a ticket! Super excited to join the hallway track and show folks how to do more with Rails using JRuby! 🤩
Good news! I will be in Austin during Rails World 2026 and available for JRuby office hours. I'm still looking for a ticket (budget is very tight!) but I can't miss out on meeting Rails folks from around the world. If you're a JRuby user or might like to be, let's have a chat!

JRuby 10.1.1.0 is released, with a bunch of compat fixes, more performance work, and several third-party CVEs resolved. JRuby 10.1 is our active development branch, with 10.0 being stable. Upgrading is recommended if you want the latest and greatest!

Our friends over at @fastrubyio have posted a nice compatibility matrix for JRuby versions, covering Ruby and Rails versions.
Check it out to see how the versions line up or to learn how JRuby can help you run Ruby and Rails better!

Loving #rubyconf this year and seeing so many friends! I'm holding office hours today by the pool at Red Rock Resort, if you're at the event or in the area. We're in cabana number 4 in the roped-off area to the left (see picture). Come say hi and get a JRuby t-shirt or sticker!
