Pittsburghers claims Dr. Jonas Salk as one of the city's greatest heroes. Born in New York City, Salk in 1947 was appointed director of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. With funding from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis β€” now known as the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation β€” he began to develop the techniques that would lead to a vaccine to wipe out the most frightening scourge of the time: paralytic poliomyelitis. Contrary to the era’s prevailing scientific opinion, Salk believed his vaccine, composed of β€œkilled” polio virus, could immunize without risk of infecting the patient, according to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Salk administered the vaccine to volunteers who had not had polio, including himself, his lab scientist, his wife and their children. All developed anti-polio antibodies and experienced no negative reactions to the vaccine. In 1954, testing began on one million American children, who became known as the Polio Pioneers. On April 12, 1955, the results were announced: the vaccine was safe and effective. In the two years before the vaccine was widely available, the average number of polio cases in the U.S. was more than 45,000. By 1962, that number had dropped to 910. Hailed as a miracle worker, Salk never patented the vaccine or earned any money from his discovery, preferring it be distributed as widely as possible. πŸŽ‰ It's official: Allegheny County has made history! πŸŽ‰ Today, County Executive Sara Innamorato signed our Paid Parental Leave regulation into effect. Allegheny County is now the first county in the nation to take this step in a state without a statewide paid leave law. πŸ‘Ά "Today Allegheny County made history for families. Paid parental leave gives new parents time to heal and bond, which means healthier babies and healthier communities. We listened to every comment, built a balanced policy, and we're ready to help employers succeed during the implementation year," Dr. Iulia Vann, Allegheny County Health Department Director. Why a health department? Because recovering from childbirth is a medical need, and the first weeks of a baby's life shape health for years to come. Paid leave supports: βœ… Maternal recovery and postpartum mental health βœ… Infant bonding and healthy starts βœ… Fewer avoidable emergency visits What the regulation provides: 🍼 Up to 12 weeks of paid leave within the first year of a birth or adoption 🍼 Applies to employers with 15 or more eligible employees 🍼 A full year for employers to prepare, with private plan options Thank you to every parent, employer, clinician, and advocate who shared their voice.

Technology should enhance β€” not replace β€” fundamental infection prevention practices. AI-powered outbreak detection, genome sequencing, UV robotics, and automated environmental monitoring are reshaping what’s possible in infection prevention. The next generation of IPs will wield technology as their primary instrument β€” while the fundamentals of hand hygiene and patient safety remain the foundation. Infection preventionists are already leveraging AI tools like large language models, predictive analytics platforms, and automated surveillance systems to identify patterns, flag risks, and respond faster than ever before. Programs like the SGNA AI Infection Prevention Champions initiative are showing what IP practice looks like when technology is a true partner. We join the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology in marking International Infection Prevention Week.
