For Women’s History Month, I’m honoring another remarkable Canadian hero, Roberta Bondar, CC, OOnt, FRSC and Canada's first woman astronaut.
Â
Despite being dissuaded from pursuing science as it “wasn’t a subject for girls”, Bondar went on to complete a Bachelor of Science in zoology and agriculture, a Master of Science, a PhD in neuroscience and a Doctor of Medicine. Bondar became the first Canadian woman and second Canadian in space when she flew aboard the American space shuttle Discovery in 1992. She is a pioneer in space medicine research. Through the Roberta Bondar Foundation, she educated Canadians about environmentalu stewardship through art and photography. A Companion of the Order of Canada, she received the Order of Ontario, the NASA Space Medal, and an induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and Canada's Walk of Fame. She paved the way for women in science, medicine, and exploration.
