Great to see the fine piece of work in the public domain - a single amino acid in the Tie1 ectodomain (allowing cleavage vs. no cleavage) making the difference between angiogenesis and inflammation - nothing compares to the power of discoveries in definite genetic in vivo models!
This Research Letter identifies a long sought molecular switch in a pathway that regulates both blood vessel growth and inflammation: doi.org/10.1172/JCI204085 Mahak Singhal @Mahak906, Hellmut G. Augustin @HellmutAugustin & team @uniklinik_hd find that ectodomain cleavage of the vascular receptor Tie1 distinguishes the inflammatory from the angiogenic functions of Angiopoietin-Tie signaling, mechanistically uncoupling two fundamental #vascular programs.

Congratulations to Ki Hong Lee & Moritz Jakab for their landmark paper in @NatureComms showing that endothelial cell Wnt-mediated angiocrine signaling in the liver is controlled by hemodynamic forces and not by oxygen gradients. Stunningly beautiful work! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Congratulations to Xiaowen Zhang for her spectacular publication in @CD_AACR identifying a subpopulation of LPL-expressing intratumoral endothelial cells that decisively controls the anti-tumor immune response in liver metastases. See: aacrjournals.org/cancerdisco…

Exciting new work for the Angiopoietin aficionado: Angiopoietin dysregulation as early hallmark of amyloid- driven vascular dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease. Must read work from the @wysscoray and @CCB_CBI lab published on @biorxivpreprint.

2025 has been an intense and in part rough year. Time to let body and soul heal and recover. Found a wonderful place overlooking Costa Adeje on the lovely island Tenerife (oceanviewmontesol.com). Spectacular view – plenty activities – great new ideas - feels like rejuvenation!

Another hyped study in @NatureMedicine claiming to have developed a predictive test for the identification of women at risk of developing preeclampsia. Sobering: The predictive value is no better than the cheap routine measurement of sICAM & sVCAM reported more than 20 years ago.

Gratifying to now see our pericrine liver work in the print version of @Nature (nature.com/articles/s41586-0…). Massive piece of work with 651 display items (174 main, 477 supplement). Feels like we are publishing books and not papers. Thanks to @RobSchwabe for great collaboration!

Angiocrine signaling is rocking - pericrine signaling is the new kid on the block: Hepatic stellate cells control liver function (‘HSCs make the liver great again’) – now published @Nature (nature.com/articles/s41586-0…). Fantastic collaboration with the @RobSchwabe lab @ColumbiaUniv.

Spectacular hemangioma work from @BischoffJoyce lab in @jclinicalinvest. Fantastic basic science (discovery of SOX18-mevalonate pathway in hemangioma) combined with great translational perspective (drug repurposing). Congrats to Anne Holm! Check it out: dm5migu4zj3pb.cloudfront.net….

Dear Community: I really liked X as a science communication platform. But, sadly, it has deteriorated to a science-ignoring, fake (alternative) news-spreading, conspiracy-promoting, and far right wing advocacy social media platform. Time to move on. See you on Bluesky. Hellmut

I may for a while duplicate posts on both platforms and decide in a few months to permanently leave X. For the time being, I want to give them a chance to return to normal (wanna stay optimistic and not become cynical with all the terrible developments in the world).
