Climate change is a public health, social justice and development challenge. Yet, its intersection with ageing remains underexplored, particularly in India.
The latest special edition of the HelpAge India Research and Development Journal, โImpact of Climate Change on Older Persons in Indiaโ, brings together research and perspectives that place older persons at the centre of climate action and resilience-building.
Edited by Anupama Datta, Head โ Engagement & Advocacy, HelpAge India, this issue features three articles examining the impact of climate change on the psychological wellbeing and health of older persons, and the need for age-friendly, community-led approaches to disaster preparedness and resilience.
Featuring contributions by:
โข Dr. Deepika Nambiar, Clinical Psychologist, Nishtha Healthcare, Bengaluru, on the psychological impact of climate change on older adults in India.
โข Anoushka Mukherji, Law Student, National Law University Odisha, on disaster risk reduction and building age-friendly societies through community resilience.
โข Basabadatta Jena, PhD Scholar and Sambalpur University Research Fellow, PG Department of Sociology, and Dr. Tattwamasi Paltasingh, Adjunct Professor, PG Department of Social Science, Fakir Mohan University, Odisha, on climate change, health vulnerabilities and resilience among older persons.
The contributions underscore the need for integrated approaches to climate adaptation, healthy ageing, disaster preparedness and social inclusion. They also highlight the importance of recognising older persons not only as people affected by climate-related risks, but as active contributors to community resilience.
