My paper on motor cortex during free flight in bats is online. The dynamics look quite different from the usual picture. Maybe because flight is a hard control problem: hand-like wings, many degrees of freedom, millisecond precision. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…

I had trouble fully unpacking what this paper actually was measuring, what its findings were, and what the implications are for human/primate consiousness so i had Claude read through the paper and this thread, compose a script, and create an explainer video
1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness. New preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898… (led by @HesseJanis, with @FrankLanfranchi, @_conor_mcgrory, @Yuelin_Shi, and @EngelTatiana)

Thrilled to share this new preprint with research led by @HesseJanis. These results have forced me to reconsider some my most basic intuitions about visual perception and consciousness, and I’m incredibly happy to have been part of this project. More: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Very excited to share the most important discovery of my career yet: your brain switches between a conscious and an unconscious mode ~15 times every second. Consciousness may depend not on where in the brain activity occurs but when. Find out more below. bit.ly/3WvA6di

Our paper is now out! nature.com/articles/s41586-0… A big question: 1) Is IT cortex well described as a general-purpose feedforward DNN? OR 2) Are face patches genuinely specialized for processing faces? Read on to find out the answer. (1/N)
29% IT is feedforward DNN
23% IT is domain-specific

Thrilled to share the discovery that face cells rapidly code-switch, within 20 ms, from a tuning optimized for face detection to a completely different tuning optimized for face discrimination. This switch is gated by successful detection of a face and doesn’t happen for objects.
I am beyond excited to share a new paper “Rapid, concerted switching of the neural code in inferotemporal cortex,” led by @Yuelin_Shi and Dasheng Bi. We describe a new form of neural computation in which single neurons rapidly change their tuning to temporally multiplex different functions. In < 20 ms, cells switch from a code optimized for face detection to a code optimized for face discrimination. I think this discovery fundamentally changes our current concept of neural representation. (1/N) biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Excited to share that we found modules in visual cortex for segmenting a visual scene into objects. Find more details in our paper just published in PNAS (pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.22…) or the summary thread below: (1/8)

We could also decode segmentation from cells in segmentation patches (86%, chance:25%), significantly better than outside the patches. Interestingly, color could be decoded less well from segmentation patches compared to outside regions. (7/8)

The discovery of segmentation patches makes future studies on how the brain segments the visual scene more tractable. E.g., in the future, it would be interesting to see whether inhibition of these patches leads to behavioral deficits related to scene segmentation. (8/8)
