Remote Work and Hybrid Work changed my life forever & opened a ridiculous amount of doors. I'm super thankful for it and unilateral bashing of remote work is insane.
However, there are some companies/jobs that can be remote-first but many innately cannot be. When the car salesman I was buying a car from at the dealership said he didn't get why he had to be in the office, that didnt make sense! Ppl are coming in to buy a car everyday.
Secondly, there's massive bifurcation in remote worker talent. There's people like me who work a cool 12-14 hours/day & then ppl that absolutely slack. Remote-first companies should desperately want to hire ppl who work their ass off because they love to, and because they dislike in-office so much. I wake up and immediately start working instead of doing a useless, unproductive commute.
But there's other obvious benefits to be remote first: pet care, child care, and familial involvement. You can go to that Doctor's appointment or Kid's baseball game and just plug in for an hour later at night.
But also too - household formation. There is continued amazement as to why people aren't having kids and why DINKs embarrassingly exist, and part of it would be resolved if someone in the household worked remotely or had a level of flexibility that significantly cut down childcare costs while still providing dual-income.
Most all-in RTO is incredibly destructive for household formation - not a lot of people are paid enough for only one person in the household to work and the Boomers left us holding the bag on a lot of stuff.
We need stop kidding ourselves that every white collar job is life & death and requires being glued to a desk. It's just not the reality - that world ended in 2020. Thank god for the remote first companies that still get it.
