Why do symptoms linger in
#Crohnsdisease in remission❓
Recent findings from
@IBDimmunology,
@umfoodoc & colleagues found clues:
✅ Patients with quiescent Crohn's and persistent symptoms were enriched in sulfur-containing amino acid pathways
✅ Downstream mitochondrial function was also perturbed
✅ Patients with quiescent Crohn's and persistent symptoms shared similar microbial diversity, community structure, and metabolites with active Crohn's
✅ A dietary pattern that reduces the growth of sulfur-metabolizing gut microorganisms has shown potential benefits in adults with mild–moderately active ulcerative colitis by
@Alice_APD et al. and might be considered also in some patients with Crohn's in remission:
🔸 Prioritize intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber (> 30g fiber/day)
🔸 Gluten is allowed
🔸 Moderate animal protein intake (1 g/kg)
🔸 ⬇️ meat intake
🔸 ⬇️ additives
💡 Despite normalization of inflammation, gut microbiome structure and functions can be altered in patients with Crohn's with persistent symptoms 👉 diet can help by preventing the bloom of microbes that feed on dietary sulfur
