NEW | 🇪🇺 Brussels wants to establish a Maritime Security Hub to improve monitoring and information-sharing across the region. Its first component would be an Arctic Cable Hub, designed to help monitor, protect and repair submarine cables connecting Europe and the North Atlantic. The EU also plans to expand satellite surveillance through Copernicus, with an Arctic monitoring pilot scheduled for 2027. Another priority is strengthening Europe's icebreaker capacity, including support for joint procurement and industrial cooperation. The logic is protecting infrastructure in the Arctic requires more than detecting potential threats. Europe also needs the ships, technology and industrial capacity to respond. Russia's military presence, China's growing interest and competition over northern shipping routes are all part of the changing security environment.

NEW | 🇺🇸 The USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group is heading toward the Middle East, where the USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush are already operating. Washington has also deployed the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, potentially joining the Boxer group and its 11th MEU. That could temporarily put three carrier strike groups and two Marine expeditionary units in the region. Question is: the Roosevelt arriving as an additional combat force or to replace the George Washington? Earlier reporting suggested a relief mission while US officials have also described plans for a possible three carrier surge.

ANALYSIS | 🇸🇦🇵🇰🇹🇷🇪🇬 Back on October 5, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey said they'd activated the Mecca Pact and would carry out a "rapid deployment" of forces to the kingdom. It's been two weeks now. Pakistan was already there. Riyadh confirmed Pakistani fighters and support aircraft at King Abdulaziz Air Base in april months before the pact was trigered. Islamabad still hasn't said how many people it has in the country, and Khawaja Asif says they're doing recon and support while the Saudis do the fighting. Turkey is where it gets murky. Asif said Turkish forces were there too, but Ankara never confirmed it. Last week the Turkish MoD said parliament has to ratify the pact first, then approve sending troops abroad, and the size of the contribution gets decided after that. I haven't found a deployment motion going through parliament yet (happy to be corrected on this one). To be fair, Turkish technical teams and some air defence and EW kit have reportedly been in Saudi Arabia since last year, so the part that's missing is the new deployment under the pact. Egypt isn't even in the pact. Sisi asked parliament to approve air defence and logistics support for Riyadh and the vote got pushed to October 26. One opposition party told its MPs to abstain because they weren't told the objectives, how long it would last or what it would cost. Then today the UK, which isn't in the pact at all, approved Typhoon missions over Saudi Arabia. I don't think this means the pact is empty. Turkey's delay looks more like legal procedure than cold feet, and most Egyptian MPs seem to be on board. But right now the only new fighter missions I can actually confirm are British.

BREAKING | 🇺🇦🇺🇸 Elon Musk personally ordered the October 14 slowdown of the military-grade Starlink service used by Ukrainian forces, according to a new Wall Street Journal investigation citing US officials. The restrictions reportedly disrupted Ukrainian strike drones and drones used to intercept Russian attacks. Musk previously said Starshield restrictions were controlled by the US government. Trump denied ordering the slowdown.

NEW | 🇬🇧🇮🇷 British counterterrorism police have re-arrested two men in the investigation into suspected Iranian-linked activity near RAF Fairford, the airbase used by US bombers during the war against Iran. The suspects are a 24-year-old British national, originally detained near the base on September 27, and a 25 year old British-Iranian national arrested in London on October 1. Both had previously been released on bail. They are now being held on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service under the UK's National Security Act. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor says investigators still consider Iranian state involvement “highly likely,” but are working to establish its extent and objectives. Iran has denied involvement. Five other men remain on bail, and no formal charges have been announced. The investigation is increasingly focused on possible foreign intelligence involvement.

UPDATE | 🌐 NATO is stepping up its presence in the Black Sea after a series of deadly drone attacks against commercial ships near Romania and Bulgaria. Following a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the alliance announced additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems and drones to strengthen surveillance and reconnaissance. NATO military spokesperson Col. Martin O'Donnell says allies have also sent, or are preparing to send, intelligence personnel and forensic teams to examine evidence from the attacks. The immediate priority is improving awareness of what is happening at sea and gathering evidence that could help identify those responsible. The number of additional aircraft and drones, their deployment locations and the timetable for full operational availability remain unclear.

BREAKING: 🇩🇰 Two young men, aged 18 and 21, have been arrested in Denmark on suspicion of espionage for Russian intelligence services, in a case involving a Danish defence technology company that supplies anti-drone equipment to Ukraine and NATO forces. North Jutland Police, working alongside Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service (PET), are investigating the case involving MyDefence, a company headquartered on Hjørringvej in Nørresundby. According to prosecutors, the two accused allegedly photographed the company on October 19, together with several as-yet-unidentified individuals. The images were subsequently sent to a user on the messaging service Telegram. The prosecution believes the photographs were intended for a Russian intelligence service. Danish broadcaster DR, which is also covering the court proceedings, reports that a third person is said to remain at large. The suspects are charged under Section 108(1) of the Danish Penal Code, which concerns unlawful intelligence activities on behalf of a foreign power. MyDefence develops and supplies anti-drone solutions to military and security forces worldwide, including the US Army, the Australian Army, Ukraine and NATO forces. Both men appeared before the Court in Aalborg and pleaded not guilty. The hearing is being held behind closed doors as the investigation continues.

BREAKING: 🇩🇰 Denmark has raised the threat level for destructive cyberattacks against the country from MEDIUM to HIGH. SAMSIK now assesses that it is likely Russia will attempt to carry out destructive cyberattacks against Denmark. There are five possible threat levels, with HIGH being the second-highest. The highest level, VERY HIGH, is reserved for situations where authorities have information that attacks are being launched or malicious activity is ongoing. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described the updated threat assessment as deeply worrying, saying Russia must not be allowed to sow division within NATO.

BREAKING: Danish Defence Intelligence warns that Russia is expected to significantly intensify its hybrid war against the West and NATO in the coming months. An actual invasion of a NATO country is considered unlikely, but it can no longer be ruled out. Denmark says the situation is now more serious than at any time since the end of the Cold War. Thomas Ahrenkiel, head of Danish Defence Intelligence, says Russia is expected to launch more frequent attacks with potentially greater consequences for the countries affected, while seeking to weaken support for Ukraine and divide the NATO alliance. Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus says Russia has increased its activities in recent months, with increasingly serious hybrid attacks and more direct efforts to prevent support for Ukraine from reaching Kyiv. He points to sabotage against the defence industry and says Russia is fundamentally trying to pressure the West. Bruus warns that the increased Russian activity could lead to serious incidents in Denmark. He urges people to follow the authorities’ instructions and remain united, while stressing that Danish intelligence services, authorities and police have been preparing for these threats for a long time. The Danish assessment says Russia’s hybrid attacks in the coming months could become more frequent and have greater consequences for the countries affected. Bruus says more than ten serious incidents have been seen across Europe in recent months, including the incident in the waters off Gedser and the discovery of drones at Leipzig Airport in Germany. He stresses that Denmark is not currently talking about military attacks against the Kingdom of Denmark. Ahrenkiel says Russia has intensified its hybrid attacks in recent months, involving missiles, drones and attacks against targets across Europe. He also says it is new that Danish intelligence can no longer rule out an actual Russian invasion of a NATO country, although such an invasion remains unlikely. He describes the situation as dangerous. According to Ahrenkiel, limited military attacks could include isolated strikes with long-range weapons such as drones or missiles against infrastructure that plays a role in supporting Ukraine. He also warns that Russia could use false-flag operations. Another scenario would involve Russia deploying military forces into a limited area of a NATO country bordering Russia, potentially under the pretext of protecting local Russian minorities. Ahrenkiel says the aim would be to divide the alliance. Finally, Danish Chief of Defence Michael Hyldgaard says the threats from Russia against Denmark and its allies have increased. He says Denmark’s military is adapting in cooperation with intelligence services and NATO, including bringing forward major investments in the army brigade and the acquisition of fighter aircraft. Hyldgaard says the Armed Forces are prepared: "We will fight and win with what we have and those we fight with. We are ready to do so regardless of the threat." More information is coming soon as the Danish Defence Intelligence Service holds a press conference on the new assessment and the Russian threat.

The two suspects were arrested yesterday, October 19, but details of the espionage case only emerged today, October 20, when they appeared in court. North Jutland Police confirmed the arrests today, saying the investigation was being conducted in cooperation with Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service (PET). The two men, aged 18 and 21, appeared before the Court in Aalborg at 16:30 local time for a preliminary custody hearing. The proceedings are being held behind closed doors at the prosecution’s request, and the hearing is still ongoing.

NEW | 🇬🇧🇸🇦 The UK has approved RAF Typhoon missions to help defend Saudi cities and critical infrastructure against Houthi drones and missiles. The new package also includes an A400M transport aircraft, British military advisers and a 90-day extension of air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi forces. British Typhoons will not conduct offensive strikes against the Houthis. However, the UK government acknowledges that its refuelling support also covers Saudi air operations aimed at Houthi military targets inside Yemen. In other words, Britain's planned fighter patrols are defensive, while its wider military support can also sustain Saudi operations across the border.

NEW: Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the recent riots in Milan and other parts of Italy were the result of what he called a hybrid war being waged against Western countries through unconventional tools such as TikTok, social media and YouTube. Crosetto said that three in ten young people had participated in the demonstrations and six in ten supported them, arguing that young people had been subjected to a counter-education outside their families and schools that shaped their values, ambitions and worldview in ways that conflict with democratic rules.

🌐 MORNING WATCH | OCTOBER 20 Washington has acknowledged possible delays in air-defense deliveries to Ukraine. Iranian officials, meanwhile, describe a strategy of dragging out talks with the US. In Yemen, the toll from yesterday's missile strike keeps rising. 🇺🇸🇺🇦 USA / UKRAINE — Marco Rubio says interceptors purchased through NATO's PURL scheme may not have reached Kyiv. He denies any deliberate political decision to withhold them. The number of missiles and cause of the delay remain unclear. 🇮🇷 IRAN / USA — Three senior Iranian officials and another insider tell Reuters that Tehran is prolonging negotiations partly to deny Trump a diplomatic win before the November 3 midterms. Fear of renewed US strikes is another factor. 🇾🇪 YEMEN — Authorities in Shabwa now report 73 killed, more than 200 wounded and 14 missing after Monday's Houthi strike on the al-Alam training camp. The toll remains provisional. 🇸🇦 SAUDI ARABIA — Riyadh's flagship Future Investment Initiative, scheduled for October 26–29, has been postponed to 2027 after weeks of attacks. The delay is a tangible economic consequence of the conflict. 🇪🇬 EGYPT — Parliament's vote on possible military support for Saudi Arabia was postponed yesterday until October 26.

What we need to understand is that, for years, we have been witnessing an increasingly aggressive wave of divisive content, disinformation, bots and state actors exploiting our differences to turn people against one another. Everything is becoming a battle between two opposing sides. There is no longer room for nuance, for dialogue, or even for people who refuse to belong to either camp. Every issue becomes another reason to hate, another reason to divide, another reason to see each other as enemies. This is becoming increasingly dangerous with every passing day. A society that can no longer think critically, disagree peacefully or find common ground becomes easier to manipulate. And while we fight each other, those who benefit from our division have every reason to keep it going.

Per @Liz_Friden The U.S. is sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, two U.S. officials confirm to Fox News. The ships will arrive in the Middle East by the end of November, the officials said. These new deployments will add about 10,000 Sailors and Marines to the Middle East. The USS Roosevelt will be the third aircraft carrier in the Middle East, joining the USS George H.W. Bush which arrived to the region in April, and the USS George Washington which arrived in mid-August to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. This will provide more options for the U.S. as President Trump is reportedly considering ramping up strikes on Iran after the Midterms.  The USS Roosevelt departed its home port of San Diego on Sunday and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed from San Diego on Monday along with the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group typically include about 4,200 Marines and Sailors. The USS Roosevelt carrier strike group includes about 6,000 Sailors.

UPDATE| 🇸🇦🇾🇪 Saudi Arabia has spent billions building one of the region's most advanced air-defense networks. Yet Houthi missiles and drones continue to reach sensitive targets. A senior US official briefed on Saudi defenses told the Wall Street Journal that the Houthis are combining drones, low-flying cruise missiles and ballistic missiles in coordinated waves, while also targeting areas without air-defense coverage. According to the official, Saudi forces have intercepted more than 90% of Houthi missiles aimed at protected areas. But more than half of recent Houthi attacks reportedly targeted locations outside that coverage. With interceptor stocks under pressure and launchers difficult to locate inside Yemen, Saudi Arabia faces a challenge that additional air-defense systems alone may not quickly resolve.

NEW | 🇺🇦🇺🇸 Ukraine says a significant shipment of Patriot interceptor missiles, already paid for by its allies, is being held up pending US approval. Ukrainian officials told the Kyiv Independent that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has yet to authorize the transfer. The Washington Post separately reports that some Patriot missiles held by allied countries are awaiting US permission to be transferred to Ukraine. Hegseth has not formally rejected the requests. A US official denies Ukraine's allegations, while NATO says deliveries through its PURL initiative are continuing, including air-defense equipment. Kyiv suspects the delays are politically motivated amid worsening relations with the Trump administration. With Russia continuing its ballistic missile attacks, the status of those approvals is becoming an increasingly urgent question for Ukraine's air defenses.
