In 1950, a farmer using the best equipment could harvest about 30 acres a day. Today, a combine can harvest those same 30 acres in half that time. 🫛🌽 Enjoy this look back at how much combines have changed throughout the years! Not funded by the soybean checkoff.

Hey farmers: We’re bringing your thoughts to America’s ag leaders. 📜 This week, our own Grant Kimberley and Matt Herman brought the perspectives they’ve heard from Iowa farmers to a discussion with ag leaders including USDA Under Secretary Richard Fordyce and Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig. The conversation in Leighton covered the farm bill, water quality, market conditions and the future of farming.   Not funded by the soybean checkoff.

In 2012, Iowa Soybean Association member Rick Kimberley hosted then-Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping during a trade visit to Iowa. Last week, he hosted leaders from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, including Director-General Qu Dongyu. 🚜 Pictured below is Rick with both leaders, 13 years apart. We do a couple hundred trials with Iowa farmers each year, including trials farmers bring to us based on their own ag questions.  In fall 2024, one farmer tested nitrogen stabilizers in the fall and spring. The yield response he saw that year could pay for a stabilizer for the next five years. This year, we ran another test to see if nitrogen stabilizers are worth their cost. “I found a kernel of corn nestled in the handle of my dryer lint screen the other day. The clinking I heard during the drying cycle was the kernel, not the metal button on my son’s pants. I smiled, thinking about how often my mom must have found these harvest treasures while doing laundry on the farm. 🌽 It got me thinking about the treasures that show up in unexpected places this time of year: • Grain scale tickets and farm store receipts forgotten in shirt pockets, now dryer-shredded into a gray ball of lint. • Rock-hard soybeans rolling across the floor, kicked free from the deep tread of boots worn to the co-op. • A red paisley-printed handkerchief pulled from a back pocket to wipe a forehead, leaving a dusty, brown imprint where field grime met sweat.” - Bethany Baratta, editor-in-chief of Iowa Soybean Review Read the rest of her column, Pockets Full of Harvest, here: hubs.li/Q04CbY8P0 Not funded by the soybean checkoff.

We’ve met a lot of farmers since our start in 1964.  We’ve seen farmers try new approaches. Take risks. Put others first. Work through difficult seasons.  Most of all, we’ve seen farmers making sacrifices.  Today, on #NationalFarmersDay, we’re thanking the Iowa farmers who give so much to their land, their families and their legacies. 🌾  Not funded by the soybean checkoff.

In 2008, nearly 3 million acres of Iowa corn and soybeans sat underwater. 💧 Flooding and tornadoes tore through Iowa that year, making it the sixth-most-expensive FEMA disaster declaration in U.S. history, behind disasters including Hurricane Katrina and 9/11.  📖 We covered the aftermath in our October 2008 Iowa Soybean Review publication. Here’s what the cover looked like:  Not funded by the soybean checkoff.

How might 45Z benefit Iowa farmers? 🌱 45Z gives biofuel producers a tax credit for making lower-carbon fuel. Some of that value could make its way back to farmers who use certain conservation practices. Our experts are breaking down what farmers need to know about 45Z payments. Dave Garlie was talking to his firefighter friend a decade ago when his friend pointed at a bucket of firefighting foam and said, “This stuff is killing us.” 🪣 Dave learned that firefighting foam is a major source of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.” 🧯 That was the beginning of Dave’s interest in making a safer option to douse flames: a foam made with soybeans. Hear how Dave turned that idea into a safer alternative made from soybeans: hubs.li/Q04zmFbj0 Funded by the soybean checkoff.
