Humans live many more years than mice, but our brain networks are aging much faster. In PNAS we show that brain network decline follows a common trajectory across mouse and human adulthood, with features of network organization linked to more rapid decline.

How do brains change with age? By analyzing brain activity throughout the lives of mice, @ItamarKahn @GaganWig @ezra_wn & team found that the rodent’s brain ages similarly to that of a human. Studying mice could therefore be a powerful way to learn more about how our brains decline as we grow old. zuckermaninstitute.columbia.… @Columbia @UT_Dallas #neuroscience

Thanks for the coverage of our new findings! w/ @ItamarKahn @ezra_wn @CVLneuro @UTDResearch @ZuckermanBrain
What do mice and humans have in common? 🐭🤔 Research from @UT_Dallas helps demonstrate how both human and mice brains are organized around functionally specialized neural networks — and as they age, these networks become less differentiated. The research is helping to create a new framework for understanding aging, declining brain function, and potential new treatments. UTD has more: news.utdallas.edu/health-med…

New exciting results from a collaboration with @GaganWig. Contributions from past and present lab members (@eyalbergmann, Gabriella Vill, Sasha Kavushansky, @IritDol, and @jadasleh) to the awake mouse fMRI. Well done @ezra_wn for leading this effort.
We know aging reorganizes large-scale brain networks in humans, with real consequences for cognition and dementia risk. What we haven't had is an animal model of this phenomenon — one that could help us figure out why it happens and how to intervene. We’ve now mapped brain network changes over a wide range of the mouse adult lifespan. The changes mirror key features of human brain aging, but not entirely, and the differences are just as interesting as the similarities. New paper in @PNASNews 🧵 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.25…
