Born on this day in 1885: Niels Bohr. In 1913, he proposed that electrons travel in quantized "stationary state" orbits around the nucleus. This model explains why atoms don't simply collapse. Bohr received the 1922 Physics Nobel.

Can a material survive a trip through space and keep working when it gets there? That's what Sunil, a physics professor at @Norfolkstate, is trying to find out this summer through our @ENERGY Visiting Faculty Program.
He and his students synthesize functional quantum materials at Norfolk State, then bring them to us to study how their structure and magnetic properties change under radiation, work that could shape future spacecraft, satellites and electronics.
