Gorgeous poem by my friend Howard Altmann in yesterday’s Atlantic, if anyone craves a reprieve from the daily cascade of the ugly and dreadful: theatlantic.com/books/2026/1…

Only disappointment about Zacharia getting the sack is that now we only get to see one SNL cold open about her.

Totally agree. I *think* in em dashes.
I really can’t emphasize enough how mad I am at AI for stealing the em dash from me. I was an em dash guy long before ChatGPT, and now every time I use one I wince knowing someone will think I’m a hallucinating robot. This is actual cultural appropriation.

George Packer's essay about his mother may have the most striking first sentence I've ever read. But it's so much more than that. Just read this bit too. theatlantic.com/magazine/202…

Back when I was a book critic, I noticed how many reminiscences obscure as much as they reveal. But not this stunning piece by George Packer. He's skinless here. He's written the perfect memoir in miniature. theatlantic.com/magazine/202…

It only now shamefully occurs to me — after spending a lot of time talking to the Macs on this anniversary — that I should’ve asked yesterday if anyone out there knew Bobby and has any new stories to tell. I’d love to relate them.
Bobby McIlvaine was 26 when he died in the September 11 attacks. In 2021, @JenSeniorNY wrote about grief, conspiracy theories, and one family’s search for meaning in the decades since 9/11. Revisit the Pulitzer Prize–winning story: theatln.tc/M5hM8CcK theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…

It's been 25 years.
Thread about my cover story today in @Theatlantic: My brother's roommate, Bobby McIlvaine, was killed on 9/11. They'd lived together since college. Bobby was 26 years old. 1/8

So it's now being run by Ukrainians and immigrants. Thank god.
Pete Hegseth: The Pentagon is no longer run by bureaucrats; instead, it's run by combat-tested veterans and world-class business leaders who are running the department like a business.

Every Victor Wembanyama article before the finals was “He’s an erudite master - part Monet, part Magic Johnson” and every article defending him after his Finals performance is “He did it by accident, you see, he’s just a baby and he’s also dumb”

I love that the community note here is “This man bet on the Spurs” and not “This is batshit insane”
The New York #Knicks star Jalen Brunson married a Jewish woman in 2023 and then 3 years later wins a rigged NBA championship. All sports are rigged and controlled by certain groups...

Nothing funnier than attending a Scarsdale wedding last night and a group of my parents’ friends huddled around the TV pointing at Jalen Brunson saying “I recognize him from temple!!!!”

I keep thinking about Brunson’s interview with Salters after game 1. He spoke like a man whose team had *lost*. “It wasn’t really our night, wasn’t really my night for most of the night … there a lot of things we could do better.” THAT is why they won. It’s all right there.
