💭 Re: Lamar Jackson to Miami
I get it. We haven’t had an elite QB since Marino. Lamar is, no doubt, elite. Bringing the hometown kid back to the South Florida is an awesome story to boot.
I know a big-splash trade is always fun and might even make us feel something again, but we’ve been preaching for years that we need to rebuild this thing the right way—from the ground up.
Trading for Lamar Jackson would cost premium draft capital, and he would subsequently require a massive contract extension with a whole lot of guaranteed money.
The Dolphins are still on the hook for Tua’s contract, arguably the worst of all time. Our new GM has set us up beautifully with enough cap space and draft picks in 2027 to address needs, so the last thing we should be doing is to spending it all in one place again.
Not to mention, Lamar will be 30 next season. The way he plays the game, as electric as he is, can significantly reduce the amount of time he has to play high-level football. There have also been a handful of injuries that caused him to miss a whole season’s worth of games throughout his career (and now more with the thumb).
All I’m saying is this would be the wrong way to start the rebuild we so desperately needed. As promising as our young players are, this team has a lot of holes. Lamar has a limited window, and I’m not sure this team is ready just yet to win meaningful playoff games.
If we take this gamble and it doesn’t work out, and we’re locked in to an exorbitant amount of guaranteed money, we will be right back to square one before you know it.
Let Haf and Sully choose their own guy.
