“The key to the audiobooks’ immediacy and enjoyment is the narrator of the volume, author Schajer, and he narrates the story and performs every character with empathy and without condescension. You feel and hear the characters as Schajer feels and hears them, making THEIR thoughts and feelings become OUR thoughts and feelings.” I wish every author had readers as thoughtful and supportive as Paul Dessonet @PNPD98 You can read his review of my audiobooks here:

There was no grasp in the film. It was sentimentality paraded around as if it were history or culture.

This would have saved me multiple years in high school & undergrad. But I still love the little green Greek / English Loeb books. It’s time to dive back in.
Happy to announce I built a Greek/English reader site with all the surviving plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, & Aristophanes. Multiple translations for each play; click to parse & define for any Greek word; full Greek & English search. greekdrama.johnhboyer.com

Neuschwanstein Castle was started in 1869 and designed by Christian Jank, a theater set painter. The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. In an 1868 letter to Wagner (the German composer Richard Wagner), he described the castle as “a worthy temple for the divine friend who has brought salvation and true blessing to the world.” The tragic part is that the castle cost 6.2 million gold marks (about $300 million in today’s gold value), almost twice what was planned, and King Ludwig’s debts reached 14 million marks (about $670 million). In the end, in June 1886, King Ludwig was declared insane and arrested in his bedroom at Neuschwanstein. The next day, he was found dead in Lake Starnberg along with his doctor. Even today, no one fully knows why they died.

In Nowhere, Gregg Araki extends ironic nihilism into an eschatological vision of desire. The film breaks the heart like Kafka’s Metamorphosis. #8 American, #26 overall in my book, The 50 Greatest Gay Films of All Time: amazon.com/dp/B0GZW2Q9FT #AntiHype

Full Review: boxd.it/gXEl93 #AntiHype Within bounds of a women’s tournament, *Kung Fu Soccer* ingeniously distills Stephen Chow’s craft to pure montage: the nonstop hilarity and audacity of a master. Its title fuses *Kung Fu Hustle* and *Shaolin Soccer* and it distills their fantastical martial arts confrontations ground Buddhist philosophy in vernacular experience. The result: the most cinematically awesome sports movie since Oliver Stone’s *Any Given Sunday*. Emei’s captain Shuangshuang (Zhang Xiaofei), whose countenance mingles maternal warmth and sternness, competes with former best friend Jade (Dilraba Dilmurat), who channels her angular beauty into a butch gait, for coach Xu Feng’s (Lay Zhang) attention. The pair affectionately dub him “Uncle,” despite his youthful screen-idol looks and hair. Chow details this dynamic’s implications through Sergei Eisenstein’s methods of montage: **Tonal Montage:** The actors’ performances radically combine the sincerity of unconscious play with the sophistication of self-conscious gestures, speaking to the age and aesthetics of TikTok. When Xu Feng arrives, Chow trains audience comprehension through lightning-quick editing capturing the heroines’ exaggerated gestus of admiration. His demeanor shifts from bashfulness to cocky coif-tending. **Overtonal Montage:** During the rivals’ reconciliation, Chow alternates shots initially emphasizing difference. Opposing camera movements curve into each other, forming a yin-yang figure across successive shots. Each envies the other’s approach to the vulnerability love requires. Together, they discover the need to balance these complementary dispositions. **Intellectual Montage:** An image of the protagonists as girls playing with a firework morphs into fireworks above the present-day stadium. Such visual touchstones throughout the childhood flashbacks articulate the psychological genesis of adult behavior. **Rhythmic Montage:** Kicks and ball trajectories embody divergent strategies and philosophies. Science-based Aussie Team Coral relies on brute strength, while Team Emei summons spiritual effort. Cuts responding to the action’s momentum toward the goal concretize faith. The athletes’ silhouettes against the field’s heightened green echo the gold dragon’s graphic force against that color in the iconic China Film Administration logo. **Montage of Attractions:** Recurring insertions place characters against a non-diegetic erupting volcano, projecting the anger fueling their game-playing energy. **Metric Montage:** Talk about an attraction. The year’s most ravishing actress, the eminently kissable, porcelain-skinned Xu Eye, portrays Snowy, whom the squad dismisses. After a dark night of ego-busting meditation, Shuangshuang recognizes that leadership demands humility. She joins Jade to ask Snowy to return. Yet pride clings to their personalities, and Snowy fills the gaps in their reticence with acquiescence. A press conference offers a similar gag. The skipper remains silent; reporters impose their own answers, which enter the space through montage. The prolonged pause and their rapid interventions supply the comedy. Yes, Chow addresses the transgender controversy in female football. Sumo-proportioned Guo Zi Heng takes the role of goalie Aman (pun intended) for Team Taiga, whose members wield illusory powers. He regains vigor when a womanizer in the bleachers validates his gender identity by addressing him as “pretty.” The exchange signals contemporary relevance in Chow’s upending of modern values—illusions—to express what really matters.

CLAYFACE was worse than I was led to believe. It’s anonymous studio trash that is desperately clinging onto one or two cool images to sustain an entire movie. It’s too charmless to be camp. It’s just a big movie of nothing substantial.
