Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. MLA for North Antrim. Strong & strategic unionism. Service driven & solution focused so that NI works for everyone.

I’ve added Michelle O’Neill’s “final days” of the Union to my graphic outlining the many such predictions by Sinn Fein politicians going back to 2003. It’s a long list.

I’ve known Carla Lockhart for many years, including during my time with the PSNI in Lurgan. Life takes different turns, and I wish Carla and her family all the best for the future.
𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 Upper Bann MP @carlalockhart has quit the DUP - after 19 years as an elected representative. She’ll sit as an independent MP.

Moving to hear tributes to Ciara Mageean across the Assembly chamber this morning. Whatever our political differences, we are all human beings, and cancer does not discriminate. Ciara was an inspiration on the track and in her courage facing cancer.

✍️ Statement by Ulster Unionist Party Leader Jon Burrows MLA: “My position on unionist cooperation is a matter of public record. At our party conference I said we should talk seriously about maximising the unionist vote, and I committed to playing our part in expanding unionist representation at Westminster. I also said that cooperation cannot mean one party always giving and another always taking. “The Ulster Unionist Party is willing to take part in serious, constructive discussions, but they need purpose and discretion. A phone call minutes before a public letter is published is no substitute for proper engagement. Progress is far more likely through private discussion than through the media. “It would also be helpful to clarify whether this proposal has the full support of the DUP leadership. I note that Jonathan Buckley’s call appears to be directed towards his own party leader as well as others. Any discussions must involve parties whose representatives have a clear mandate to participate and the authority to deliver. “Talks will only be productive once the DUP has resolved its own internal difficulties and can come to the table with an agreed approach rather than as a divided party. “Cooperation has its place, but better management of the votes we already have is not a growth strategy. Our task is to give more people a Union they believe in, politics they can trust and a future worth voting for.”

These murders brought to 7 the number of officer murdered between Sept and the 1 Nov ‘71. I was half way through my training as a Constable in what was an ‘Unarmed RUC’. These murders changed that ‘great hope’ & it was down to the murder campaign of militant Irish Republicans!
#OnThisDay in 1971 the IRA murdered Stanley Corry & Bertie Russell. 2 RUC policemen shot while investigating a report of a break-in at Lady Fair Boutique, Andersonstown, West Belfast. 21 spent cartridges found. Soldiers in the vicinity were stoned #OTD

69% in this poll back tougher fireworks laws. On my Facebook poll, still open, over 90% want more restrictions. I’ll raise this in the Assembly tomorrow. Enough is enough. Endless random bangs over Halloween leave animals terrified and communities distressed.
Should fireworks be banned to help tackle antisocial behaviour and reduce distress to pets, livestock and wildlife?

I can’t reply directly to Gerry - he blocked me before I entered politics. But he voluntarily attended his PSNI interview and seemed to revel in the attention. Some manhunt when the quarry turns up by appointment.

If some of the idiots in this government had ever worked in businesses or run a business they might understand the work employers to do to keep businesses running to pay the taxes and PAYE that the government squander so easily.

Employers are working people. They work long hours, take risks & create jobs. That’s why we’re pressing for funding provided to the NI Executive to reach businesses through rates relief. Supporting employers means supporting jobs, livelihoods & our economy.

Very sad news of the passing of Ciara Mageean. A remarkable athlete who brought such pride to Portaferry and inspired so many. My thoughts are with her husband, family, friends and everyone who loved her. Rest in peace, Ciara.
