This is an important platform to address LGBTQI+ refugee experiences and seek durable solutions.
I can’t think of a more deserving recognition. Frank I’ve been honoured to work alongside call you a friend for over a decade now, but in particular watching you this past year passionately fight the egregious Anti-Homosexuality Act has been remarkable. Solidarity always comrade!
Thank you for this tribute highlighting @frankmugisha’s incredible crusade for LGBTQI+ equality in Uganda. The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.
Today, the Constitutional Court of Uganda declined to nullify the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023 (AHA23). This is one of the most extreme pieces of anti-LGBTQI+ legislation in the world, and includes the death penalty & life imprisonment. #Threadshorturl.at/cdjMR
The only court case cited in the ruling was US Supreme Court case Dobbs v Jackson which ended the right to abortion in the US, indicating the successful export of extremist hate through right wing funding channels. There must be accountability.
We also call on our community to amplify the voices of the LGBTQI+ community in Uganda, and to contact their elected officials to speak out against this dehumanizing piece of legislation.
I met with the most awesome person on earth. @KimahliPowell the ExecutiveDirector of @RainbowRailroad. Just like many leaders I've met. He's a happy, polite person.
