This week, I was blessed to join Hindu New Yorkers in Queens celebrating Navratri, Durga Puja, Dashain, and Vijayadashami.  We danced garba, performed aarti, witnessed Sindoor Khela, and honored the Goddess Durga. It was an honor to come together in joy, faith, and community in temples across our city — especially after the attempted mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois last week. May we all join together in our shared responsibility to stand against hate and care for one another. Jai Mata Ki.

It’s been six days since this remarkable woman of Indian origin (see her story, attached) won the #NobelPeacePrize. And the Government of India, her ancestral homeland, hasn’t so much as congratulated her?! Shame on the petty men who have made such a deplorable decision.

As the world’s largest democracies, the U.S. and India have an obligation to promote and defend the rights to freedom of assembly and expression. @RepMcGovern and I are urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prioritize those freedoms and human rights when he meets with Indian officials in the coming days.

My family and I were worshipping at our Hindu temple in Aurora on Sunday when a white supremacist attempted a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans. I'm grateful to those who helped prevent a tragedy, but we must come together to confront the hatred that put so many innocent lives at risk.

This week, our Hindu neighbors celebrate the Goddess Durga during the festival of Navaratri.  Our neighbors will dance Garba, venerate the Goddess Durga with Sindur Khela, receive Tika from elders, set up Golu in their homes, and so much more. Whether your family calls it Durga Puja, Dashain, Dussehra, or Navratri, may this festival mark a season of reflection and renewal.

Sorry @NewYorker, this is not the beginning of the end of Indian democracy. This is what the beginning of the fight to save Indian democracy looks like. This is what the young women in the frame are doing. And they will prevail.

ONE OF D.C.’S MOST OUTRAGEOUS NIMBY SAGAS MAY FINALLY BE ENDING! In 2016, a developer proposed replacing the SunTrust bank and plaza at 18th and Columbia one of the busiest corners in Adams Morgan with 50+ homes, shops and new public space. Then came nearly a decade of opposition and litigation: 2017: Opponents sue 2021: Lawsuit dismissed 2022: Legal fight revived 2023: Vacant property donated 2026: Dispute finally ends 2029: New housing may finally open Now Jubilee Housing plans to break ground in 2027 on a six-story mixed-use building with 51 homes, retail and a new community plaza. That is welcome news, but it could take until 2029 to deliver roughly the same number of homes first proposed 13 years earlier. Public input should shape development. Cities cannot keep letting NIMBYs weaponize the process and leave valuable urban land sitting idle for a decade.

Full TOPA restoration means people have a say in what happens to their home. Pathways to homeownership, forming a co-op, or even just getting necessary fixes and agreements from a future landlord. We had universal TOPA until 2018 and periods of development booms with it!

Full TOPA restoration would mean even less housing than is currently in the pipeline.

When I first ran for office, I didn’t have a political network. I wasn’t connected. I didn’t know the right people. I’ve never forgotten what that felt like. Because who you know should never determine whether your voice is heard. That’s why I serve.
