The Korb Lab works at the intersection of epigenetics and neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Opinions are our own.
Our lab divides and conquers this week with ~half at SFN and the rest at the genetics retreat to cover both the neuro and the epigen sides of our lab! Lots of science, hikes, and very involved beverages choices.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Epigenetics Institute Retreat at the Penn Museum! From exquisite scientific talks to a robust poster session, we had a "monumentally" great time!
Anyone know what to call these and if any vendors still sell just the western gel box/DNA gel box wires separately without trying to make you buy their whole special box and lid that's incompatible with everything else in the lab?
Had a chance to swing by the Allis lab on a visit to MSKCC and a few buffers made during some final postdoc experiments in 2018 are still floating around. Grateful to have the chance to wish the lab (and the buffers) a last goodbye.
Join @PennGenetics for our symposium on May 2-3 on "The Genetics and Epigenetics of Behavior". We'll have talks, panels, and keynotes from @martinowk and @lab_schaefer. Posters on any topic in genetics are welcome! Submission deadline coming up...
Lab World Cup bracket has been extended to neighboring labs. So far the best use we’ve come up with for the big empty wall behind the emergency shower that we aren’t allowed to use for equipment or storage.
3) SARS-CoV-2 also disrupts regulation of histone posttranslational modifications, and this effect requires the histone mimic motif. And 4) the Orf8 histone mimic affects the transcriptional response to infection and loss of the mimic decreases viral genome copy number.
1) SARS-CoV-2 protein Orf8 associates with chromatin and can bind deplete chromatin regulators such as KAT2A. 2) Orf8 disrupts regulation of histone posttranslational modifications, generally promoting closed chromatin.
Early in the pandemic, we were trying to think of ways to help, keep busy at home, and expand our bioinformatic skills. @johnkee overlapped the amino acid sequences of human histones with sequences of all the SARS-CoV-2 proteins and found this:
Biggest lab accomplishment of the week... Collecting 40 brains for chromatin analysis? Finishing multiple behavioral cohorts? Final draft of a postdoc fellowship grant? NO. It was getting on the Jumbotron at the Phillies game!!! Well done @korblab.
Friday Foyo with the lab as a thanks to our 3 lab undergraduates Camille, Katie and Shreya for all their hard work.🍦And a thanks to their lab mentors for their training!
Finished out our spirit week with a lab party on the roof. If you ever have to say farewell to your very first lab members, this is the way to do it. We will miss you so much Sam and @johnkee123.
A lot of things do get easier! A few harder ones too… but things definitely change a lot really quickly and the time you’re investigating now will make things much smoother later. Keep up the amazing work. You got this!!
Enjoying a lab lunch in celebration of our awesome rotation students Kiara and Segovia with our extra large summer crew. First time we've filled this conference room.
Long overdue lab party and the sun has chosen to shine on our lab’s first undergraduate Éloïse who has just gotten her bachelors and masters degree all at once!
