Los Angeles County, California
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Street Takeover Task Force conducted maximum enforcement patrols last weekend in nearby communities: Crescenta Valley, Carson, Compton, and the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Deputies arrested 22 individuals for various offenses including driving with a suspended driver’s license, illegally possessed weapons, possession of narcotics, reckless driving, exhibition of speed, driving under the influence causing injury, driving under the influence of alcohol, and felony evading. There were 104 citations issued and 55 vehicles were found to have emissions or exhaust violations that require an inspection with the state referee. Our team has successfully prevented large, unpermitted car shows that would have attracted illegally modified cars and street takeover crews, which were advertised on social media. These events were going to take place in the cities of Cudahy and Carson. The LASD Street Takeover Task Force is committed to enhancing the safety of the public by enforcing laws related to illegal street racing, side shows, and illegally modified vehicles. We are also preventing tragedies by removing impaired drivers from the roadways. Street racing, street takeovers, and side shows are maliciously reckless events. These events endanger lives and will not be tolerated in the County of Los Angeles. Captain Robert Dean stated, “The Street Takeover Task Force did an outstanding job with enforcement this weekend. Their proactive efforts and commitment to public safety were exceptional. I’m incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication to keeping our streets safe.” For information regarding the state referee inspection process, visit their website at Ask the Ref – Bureau of Automotive Repair Smog Check Referee Program Anyone with information about future street takeovers or other related crimes are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency. On Monday, October 12, 2026, investigators assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Major Crimes Bureau (MCB) Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team (CCATS) received information a load of Sig Sauer products, worth approximately $500,000, was picked up fictitiously at a warehouse near the 4200 block of West 190th Street, Torrance, California. Detectives located the stolen cargo and arrested Arman Mnatsakanyan MO/26 and Ashot Yesayan MO/23, both of Glendale. The stolen cargo consisted of firearm parts and accessories. All of the cargo was returned to its owner. Both suspects were booked for Grand Theft Cargo. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. LASD formed the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force (ORCTF) in September 2023 to combat organized retail theft. The task force is composed of ORCTF, CCATS, and the Burglary and Robbery Task Force (BRTF). They operate out of LASD’s MCB and are dedicated to investigating, identifying, and apprehending suspect(s) of organized retail crimes. Chief Jose G. Mendoza stated, “This investigation highlights the outstanding work by our Major Crimes Bureau investigators. Thanks to their incredible teamwork and tireless efforts, hundreds of thousands of dollars of stolen gun parts were taken off the streets, reaffirming our commitment to public safety.” Detectives work in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies, other organized retail crime task forces, and federal partners to address cargo theft related incidents. If anyone has information regarding cargo theft, please contact Major Crimes Bureau at p3tips.com. or 562-946-7270. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you may call “L.A. Today, Compton Sheriff’s Station honored the 10th End of Watch anniversary of Sergeant Alfonso “Al” Lopez alongside his family. The tradition of honoring Sergeant Lopez continues as new deputies, many of whom never had the opportunity to meet him, come together to remember his service, sacrifice, and lasting legacy. Though 10 years have passed, his memory lives on, reminding us that a hero is never forgotten. EOW: October 24, 2016

In late October 1988, Deputies Chester and McSweeney were working as part of a multi-jurisdictional drug intervention task force called Operation Border Ranger. On the evening of October 24, 1988, they were aboard a UH-1H Army National Guard helicopter investigating a car parked on a remote access road off Interstate 8 in the Mountain Springs Grade area about 70 miles east of San Diego. As the helicopter descended, it apparently struck a power line between two hilltops causing it to crash and explode into the side of a mountain. The three-member National Guard crew, Sergeant Richard Romero, 39, from the Imperial County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Mark Tonkin, 31, from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and Investigator Michael Davis, 34, from the Riverside County Department also died in the crash. Both men served with the LASD for 12 years.

Shortly after midnight on August 16, 2004, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputy Randy J. Hamson conducted a follow-up investigation to an earlier hit and run traffic accident on Sierra Highway, south of Soledad Canyon Road. As Deputy Hamson surveyed the scene, he observed a car approaching the area without headlights. As he stepped out into the roadway and motioned with his flashlight toward the driver of the vehicle, another car struck him. The driver of this vehicle stopped and said he never saw Deputy Hamson. This driver was neither held nor cited. Deputy Hamson suffered head injuries and numerous broken bones. He lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered. On October 24, 2008, he succumbed to his injuries. He was 44. Randy Hamson joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on March 23, 1999. After completing his first assignment working at Pitchess Detention Center East Facility Jail, he transferred to Santa Clarita Valley Station in April 2003. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; his sons, Nicholas and Joshua; his stepsons, Matt and Shaun; his stepdaughter, Holly; his parents Carolyn and Jim; and his brothers, Tim and Michael.

Our beloved Compton Station Sergeant Alfonso “Al” Lopez passed away on October 24, 2016, after suffering a medical emergency while on duty. He proudly served the Department for 26 years. During his career, he worked in Court Services, at East Los Angeles Station, and in the Special Victims Bureau. He was later promoted to sergeant and assigned to Compton Station. As we take a moment to remember the amazing partner, friend, and family man he was, we also reflect on the incredible work he did in the communities he served. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and partners today.

On October 22, 2026, Detective Division hosted the Department’s 46th Annual Ladies Night Charity Event.   What began as a small gathering of female co-workers, became one of the largest social charity events for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It is such an amazing event that highlights the fellowship, support, camaraderie, and empowerment that women in law enforcement display.   This year’s theme was LASD Confidential, where 1950’s Hollywood glamour meets vintage detective fashion.
