Today, 24 October, marks the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations 🇺🇳 On #UNDay, we reaffirm our support for the organisation’s fundamental values: peace, security, human rights and international cooperation. Latvia will continue to be an active and responsible member of the United Nations, defending international law, human rights and a rules-based international order.  Latvia 🇱🇻 joined the @UN in 1991, restoring its place in the international community following the restoration of its independence. In 2025, Latvia was elected to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term for the first time in the country’s history, receiving strong support from UN member states. At the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference Latvia reaffirmed support for human rights and fundamental freedoms. We also stongly value the work of 3 @OSCE autonomous institutions @osce_odihr @OSCE_RFoM @oscehcnm, and engagement with civil society.

In Warsaw, on the margins of HDC, findings are presented of OSCE Moscow mechanism report on indoctrination and militarisation of 🇺🇦 children. Conclusions clearly show Russia’s crimes and systematic violations of human rights to deliberately erase identity of 🇺🇦 children.

In Geneva 🇨🇭 Latvian human rights expert Dr. Elīna Šteinerte was re-elected to the United Nations 🇺🇳 Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, established under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, for a term spanning 2027 to 2030. Honoured to participate in marking the 30 years #CTBT. Latvia remains firmly committed to the Treaty and to a world without nuclear test explosions. Let us jointly strengthen the Treaty, its verification regime, and work towards its entry into force.

 This Tuesday in Vienna, #CTBTO Executive Secretary @DrRobFloyd marked the 30th anniversary of the #CTBT alongside @MFA_Austria Minister @BMeinl, Filip Worotynski representing Mayor @BgmLudwig of @stadt_wien and @iaeaorg’s Director General @rafaelmgrossi at the Rathaus, at an event generously supported by 🇦🇺, 🇦🇹 and 🇰🇿.

The message is clear: the Treaty remains a cornerstone of the global non-proliferation and disarmament architecture, and its mission is more urgent and relevant than ever.
