Manchester bakery owner Frankie Dyer has called for Treasury Minister Emma Reynolds to resign, after the Minster said employers are not working people. The Minister’s comments prompted backlash from small businesses, who say rising costs and higher business rates are pushing them to breaking point. Emma Reynolds MP rowed back on her words in parliament, but Frankie says that drastic measures are needed to give the hospitality industry a fighting chance. #smallbusiness #hospitality #business

What a load of b*%llocks. Another person with absolutely no clue about the reality of running a small business spouting off because they can’t get themselves beyond the assumption that ‘business man bad’ 🙄
“We work harder than most of our other employees” And this is the fabrication that so many business owners tell themselves. They truly believe their business is successful in spite of their workers - not because of - and so you’re not deserving. Big boss brainworms.

Absolutely disgusting thing to say. Next time I pull an 80hr week I’ll keep myself warm at night knowing that I’m not really a ‘working person’.

On a positive note we’ve had a brilliant day collecting pumpkins for the pub for Halloween and the kids are now busy getting them carved 🎃 #familybusiness

Given the devastating blow he inflicted on hospitality yesterday I find this utterly contemptible. Shame on the landlord who let him in. @JohnHealey_MP read the room.

Currently absolutely no financial reason for us to keep ploughing away at our business. We’d be far, far better off on benefits… and a lot less stressed! Where’s the hope & aspiration in that @andyburnham ?

The cavalry was never coming.
The Budget was a disaster for Hospitality. I hoped the Government would finally listen and deliver. I’m sad to admit I was wrong. Rates relief means little when employment and operating costs keep rising. What matters is the total bill landing on the doormat, and whether there’s enough left to keep people employed and the doors open and this budget helped just 2.9% of Hospitality venues - and only just. The cavalry didn’t just fail to turn up. They ran away. Hospitality has been patient. We’ve put forward the evidence, explained the consequences and made the case for a VAT cut. We cannot keep running on warm words. To the MPs who have publicly backed a cut, thank you. Whatever your party, that support matters. To those who haven’t: don’t expect endless hospitality while staying silent about the policies putting us out of business. Perhaps it’s time the welcome on our doors reflected the support we get through yours. #Hospitality #CutVAT #VatinlinewithEurope

I’m wondering where the cavalry for hospitality is @andyburnham ? Don’t talk about business rates. Removing business rates for those rates under 18k is a JOKE when our rates were changed from 18.5 to 73.5k less than a year ago!!

The Chancellor John Healey is now on his feet to make the #Budget2026 statement. What if any good news will there be? Is the cavalry coming for #pubs as the Prime Minister promised..?

#LabourGenius. What a fucking masterstroke. Announce an “inflation-busting” pay rise, take the applause and dump the bill on small businesses. Presumably we’ll fund it from the massive money tree behind the fucking stockroom. For businesses already scraping a margin, that can mean higher prices, fewer hours, fewer jobs or scrapping investment. Absolutely inspirational stuff. And if those costs travel through the supply chain into higher prices, part of that lovely pay rise disappears straight back at the till. Crack open the champagne. Assuming anyone can still afford it. Workers deserve decent pay. Delivering better living standards takes rather more brains than announcing a bigger number and expecting employers to pull the difference out of their arses. Perhaps spend a month meeting a payroll before treating businesses like an unlimited cash machine. What a load of economically illiterate bollocks dressed up as a good-news story.

The replies to this say it all.
The Chancellor will deliver his first Budget on Wednesday. It is reported the minimum wage will increase by nearly 4%. This will mean so much to some of the lowest paid in our country. Under Labour work will pay. Labour is for working people. independent.co.uk/news/uk/po…

Keep squeezing pubs and restaurants with higher costs and taxes, and more will close Fewer businesses. Fewer jobs. Less revenue for HMRC and the Treasury You can't tax businesses that no longer exist It's basic economics
🚨JUST IN: Labour Chancellor set to hike price of a pint in upcoming budget despite struggling pubs. • Chancellor John Healey is expected to raise alcohol duty in Wednesday’s Budget, adding an extra 2p to the price of a pint. • Under the plan, duty on every pint would rise in line with 3.9 per cent RPI inflation, taking the tax from 50p to 52p. • A bottle of wine is expected to rise by between 10p and 12p depending on its strength, while a bottle of 37.5 per cent gin would go up by 35p. • The Wine and Spirit Trade Association said the government should be supporting the drinks sector rather than squeezing it further during a cost of living crisis. • The group warned that repeated alcohol tax increases have consistently failed to raise revenue.

British brewers already pay 12 times the beer duty of Germany and Spain. Piling another 2p on a pint on top of higher National Insurance is just going to lead to fewer pubs, fewer jobs and lower tax receipts.

Looks like this budget is going to put the final nails in hospitality’s coffin. Way to show you hate an industry without saying it. We ask for help and we’re given… wage rises, tax rises, duty rises. At least the gherkin on your burger will be cheaper eh 🤯

An increase to £13.20p/h equates to a minimum wage of £27,456, based on a 40 hour week. Once you factor in employers NI and basic pension contributions, the MINIMUM cost to hire a 21 year old for a company would be £31,461. This is before you factor in any overarching business costs like office space, laptops, phone, software, training, support staff, vehicles etc. This is going to be devastating to SME's who cant put together a simple 12 month budget without the goalposts being moved & their margins squeezed. It'll also be catastrophic to youngsters opportunities because businesses will simply not be able to afford to hire them. What's also incredible is that anything above £50,270 is seen as 'high earnings' in the UK and is taxed at 40%! We are governed by financially and economically illiterate morons. This will not end well.
🚨 NEW: John Healey will increase the minimum wage for over 21s from £12.71 to around £13.20
