spent the last whole night building an app that automatically splits any UPI payment above ₹2000 into pieces of ₹1999. Pay ₹3000, and it breaks the payment into ₹1999 and ₹1001. Pay ₹2000 exactly, and it breaks into ₹1999 and ₹1. Pay ₹10,000, and it breaks into 5 separate payments. Or so I thought. Then I actually sat down and researched it properly, and honestly I'm glad I didn't ship it. >It wouldn't even have worked the way I imagined it. Every single UPI payment needs its own PIN entry, and new RBI rules from 2026 make this even stricter. So splitting one payment into 5 would mean the customer typing their UPI PIN 5 separate times just to buy one thing. Nobody's doing that for a single purchase. >Small shopkeepers doing under ₹1 lakh a month through QR codes don't even have to pay this fee in the first place. So this whole app would've been solving a problem that doesn't even exist for most small merchants. Would've saved myself a few days if I'd checked that first. >This isn't some clever hack, it's actually banned. Every payment company out there (Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU) and even NPCI itself have rules against splitting one payment into smaller pieces like this. It's such an obvious trick that they made rules against it years ago when people tried the same thing with cards. >These companies actively watch for exactly this kind of pattern. If the same person pays the same shop twice within a few seconds, it looks extremely suspicious. Get caught doing this and you could lose your payment account entirely, plus get blacklisted, which makes it really hard to even open a new one later.
