We’re incredibly proud that our HOPE Cancer Trials Centre team have been going from strength to strength over recent months: opening new studies and inviting patients to be part of them. Over the last few months… · Leicester has been the first UK site for 4 trials – including studies investigating treatments for endometrial and small cell lung cancers. · The first European site to open for 2 trials into myeloma (a blood cancer), where we also welcomed the first patient in Europe her in Leicester. · We have also welcomed the first patient in the UK onto 5 trials including studies that will further our understanding of the treatment of renal and breast cancer. Huge thanks to every patient who chooses to #bepartofresearch, in Leicester and beyond. You can find out more about how you can be part of researcher here. NEWS 📢 | A study of more than 700 people has shown that those with long Covid have distinct differences in the mix of bacteria that live in their mouths and lungs, according to a study published in the European Respiratory Journal. The research, carried out as part of @PHOSP_COVID consortium, which is led by the #NIHRBRCLeicester, also shows that these differences in the lung microbiome are linked to respiratory symptoms, as well as the cognitive and digestive problems known to occur in long Covid. leicesterbrc.nihr.ac.uk/long… Researchers say their findings may shed light on why some people develop long Covid and they could point to new ways to treat the condition.

NEWS 🚨 | Millions of pounds could be saved and #research quality improved under a new action plan to tackle unreliable #antibodies in studies of human biology. The plan, published in @PLOSBiology, has been devised by #NIHRBRCLeicester researchers at the @uniofleicester from the @OGA_Community team, following agreement by a panel of 32 international experts drawn from academic scientists, scientific publishers, research funders, antibody manufacturers and university leaders. By making it standard practice to check that an antibody works in the specific experiment it is used for, the initiative aims to reduce waste, increase confidence in research results and support the development of more reliable scientific methods. 👁️ A dynamic partnership has delivered three published papers including a landmark genetic study that shone new light on how the eye develops its sharpest vision. The #NIHRBRCLeicester and @MoorfieldsBRC partnership began with Dr Mervyn Thomas, Clinical Associate Professor, Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist and Clinical Lead (Ulverscroft Eye Unit) at the @uniofleicester attending @Moorfields Eye Hospital, London clinics to gain experience and familiarity with the inherited retinal disease cohort. Inherited retinal disorders are the second most common cause of severe visual impairment in childhood and the leading cause in the working-age population. Mums whose babies contracted life-threatening sepsis and meningitis from Group B strep are calling on pregnant women to join a new NIHR-supported vaccine trial. Affecting 1 in 1,750 babies in the UK and Ireland, it is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborns. Tragically, around 50 babies die each year, and a further 70 survive with long-term disabilities. The NIHR-supported BEATRIX study is the world's first large-scale phase 3 vaccine trial for #groupBStrep. Our CEO, Prof @LucyChappell2, says: “Every woman who takes part brings us closer to the evidence we need to protect babies and mothers.” Read more about the trial and stories from impacted families: nihr.ac.uk/news/pregnant-wom…
