Today, I submitted a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security demanding accountability for the actions of federal immigration agents in Long Beach.
On Saturday, Ricardo Gonzalez, a Long Beach resident, father, and former City employee, was injured during an encounter with federal agents. What happened to Ricardo is outrageous and unacceptable.
We need ICE out of Long Beach. Our neighborhoods should be places where families feel safe, not where they live in fear of federal enforcement operations.
I am demanding an independent investigation into the incident and broader operation, the immediate removal of the agents involved from field duties, and a public accounting of the findings.
Our community deserves accountability.

We are monitoring two regional incidents - the ruptured pipeline incident in Los Angeles and the toxic chemical situation in Garden Grove and coordinating closely with regional partners as response efforts continue.
At this time, there is no impact to Long Beach neighborhoods, beaches, or recreational waters.
City teams are also assisting with local hotel accommodations for evacuated Garden Grove residents needing support.
We will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as they become available.

I am heartbroken by the tragic accident at one of our partners’ shelter sites that claimed the life of a longtime worker and injured two others.
A man who showed up to work to make an honest living lost his life in a sudden and devastating accident. Our hearts are with his loved ones, his coworkers, the injured workers, and the entire Rescue Mission community as they process this unimaginable loss.
While the investigation is still in its early stages and many questions remain, this tragedy is also a painful reminder that workplace safety matters in every setting and for every worker.
Right now, our focus is on supporting those impacted and their families and ensuring the injured workers receive the care and support they need.
We extend our deepest condolences, prayers, and wishes for healing and strength in the difficult days ahead.

We are heartbroken by the horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Acts of violence rooted in hate and fear have no place in our communities.
Long Beach is a city that values diversity, inclusion, and the freedom to worship safely and peacefully. We have been in contact with leaders in San Diego to offer our support and are keeping all those impacted in our thoughts.

For years, Big Bang on the Bay event has brought our community together and supported local nonprofits, with no documented harm to coastal resources.
This decision by the California Coastal Commission to block fireworks is difficult to understand and feels out of touch. It leaves no practical options for 2026, effectively canceling a long-standing tradition.
It also risks increasing illegal fireworks activity by removing a safe, organized alternative.
The inconsistency is hard to ignore. Fireworks continue elsewhere along the coast, including at SeaWorld, while Long Beach is told no.
We will continue advocating for Big Bang on the Bay.

Due to the Democrats’ DHS shutdown, many TSA officers are facing financial hardship and have been forced to call out — including at Long Beach Airport, where 21% of officers called out over the weekend.

Coming forward is never easy, and it takes real courage to share these experiences, especially after so many years. I’m keeping Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguía, and Debra Rojas in my thoughts. Last month, the Long Beach City Council was one of the first major U.S. cities to formally call for the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to hold the federal administration accountable for the chaos and harm they have inflicted on diverse immigrant communities like ours. We must always reject unjust policies and decisions that create fear in our neighborhoods.
Today’s news reflects a growing groundswell of concern from mayors, cities, and community leaders across the country who have been calling for justice and accountability.
But this moment does not end the work. Cities like Long Beach must continue speaking out, standing with our residents, and pushing for policies that protect the dignity and safety of everyone who calls our community home.
