A Python Software Foundation Fellow, and developer of the popular “Twisted” Python networking framework, says that Linus Torvalds’ “delusional and antisocial behavior” (aka “advocating for AI usage”) has “provoked a wave of revulsion” causing people to stop updating their Linux systems.

Congratulations to the @openbsd team on their 8.0 release! Looks like 8.0 received tons of improvements to multiple hardware architectures, expanded and improved hibernate support, and a boatload of fixes. Keep up the excellent work, OpenBSD! openbsd.org/80.html

Hey, hey, hey! I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like both the memory leak and KVM are fixed in Grok Bot! Thanks to the @Bot team for getting on top of this! Time to put that shared computer through it’s paces and make sure everything is working again.
Heads up @Grok @Bot team: There is an incredibly gnarly memory leak in the Grok Bot shared computer. The process “host-main.cjs” grows rapidly, eating up 14+ GB or RAM within minutes… rendering the shared computer unusable for most purposes (even after updates and restarts). Also… nested KVM is broken. Which is also a big blocker. Any idea what’s happening, @poteto? I assume your team is already aware, but figured I’d reach out just in case! (I also emailed the support bot.) Keep up the great work, btw!

As a general rule, the long-time (decades+) Linux kernel contributors and maintainers (Linus, Greg-KH, etc.) have embraced AI development of the kernel. The people who have objected to AI contributions to the kernel, on the other hand, tend to be newcomers (comparatively). There’s exceptions on both sides of the argument, but that generally seems to hold true.

Is this a “Linux purist” thing where those who have been maintaining Linux the longest only think patches and features can only be hand-coded?

The big Linux Kernel AI fight is heating up. 3 days ago, an anti-AI activist (Laurent Pinchart) was elected to the Linux Kernel Technical Advisory Board. Pinchart, who says there is “no ethical justification for the use of generative AI in FOSS development” (and that it is being used to “undermine democracy”), recently had a rejected Open Source Summit proposal entitled “How we can resist generative AI”. After that speech was rejected, he said he “will think of a plan B”. Plan B, apparently, involved getting on the Technical Advisory Board. Now Pinchart is pushing to have Linux adopt anti-AI policies. When long time Linux developer, Ted Tso, asked, “Who cares if [high quality contributions] are AI-generated or not?” Pinchart responded, “I do.” “There is a small number of very vocal long term maintainers who,” Pinchart said, “never really cared about the people making the kernel. That show a very strong enthusiasm for LLM’s.” “It’s borderline sickening,” he stated. This is happening as Linux Kernel patches shot past 20% (of all patches) during the month of October.

Next week, the Open Source Initiative (OSI) is hosting the “Open Technology Research Symposium”. The first session is a “Fireside Chat” with Sasha Costanza-Chock. “Sasha” identifies as a “nonbinary trans* femme”, seeking to “dismantle the matrix of domination” through “design justice”. When the Open Source Initiative says they are changing their mission… this is an indication of what they are talking about.

The Grok @Bot shared computer is surprisingly capable. It’s a full Linux machine that you can run darn near anything on. Heck, you can even drive it yourself. Pretty nifty.
Didn’t realize you could get in that far into the inner workings of the shared computer. Now you’ve given me some inspiration. 🤙

QA / Testing work being done by a team of clankers is an amazing time saver. I’m doing something similar with LCOS. A small team of bots running nearly round-the-clock tests on both individual components and the system as a whole. Code reviews, scripted tests, UI-driven tests… the works. Bots find the issues, a human evaluates the issues and decides what to fix (or not, with guidance), the bots fix the issues… rinse, repeat. Not only is the velocity of testing & development astronomically fast… but the quality is exceptionally high. This process doesn’t remove the need for human, hands-on testing… but the benefits are tremendous.
Big Omarchy QA News: The Headline: * Omarchy QA will start running against nightly every day. Still some huge hurdles to figure out, but that is the fun stuff. The Meat: Omarchy QA is going slower than I hoped for, but its getting into place. This is my second fully running agent test harness where they decide what is good. * A nice running dashboard with cancellable states * Jobs, suites, servers: have all the possible states and transitions you would expect from build servers. This part was the most surprising as it is really in depth how much effort you have to spend thinking about every possibility * suite states, live updating website that ... runs fast? Yes I did something crazy... I made a cache, i know, actual crime... ** I even have an idea to make this load instant for every single user, and make updating cache contents LIGHTNING fast... *** Fun side note. WTF ARE YOU DOING EVERYONE, WEBSITES ARE FUN TO MAKE FAST AND YOU ALL ARE MAKING HORESHIT SITES... STOP. * ability to follow live running jobs and cancel them The sad part is I have had no time to get the actual custom harness running fast, which is ok, but its hard. Now, starting today, I am going to be hooking up nightly builds and actually running this against production! Will think about how to make this a public site, but for now, its private :(

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has announced an “evolving mission”. Moving from their original mission of maintaining the “Open Source Definition”, to now explicitly include “Policy & Standards”. What sorts of “policies”? Based on recent OSI statements and activities: - Cultural Diversity. - Environmental Sustainability. - “RISE” The OSI was also the first organization to pledge to support the needs of the United Nations in the “UN Open Source Principles” declaration.
