🔥 DANGEROUS FIRE CONDITIONS FRIDAY (10/16/26) AND SATURDAY (10/17/26) Strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation are creating dangerous fire conditions across Mississippi today and into the weekend. Red Flag Warnings are in effect today as a strong cold front moves through, bringing northwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph. These conditions can cause fires to spread quickly, so now is the time to take extra precautions. 🚫 Help prevent wildfires: Follow local burn bans and restrictions. Avoid outdoor burning. Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks. Dispose of cigarettes properly. Stay Safe Mississippi!

DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON! Even emergency management professionals need to practice what they preach! Today, the MEMA team participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill to practice the actions that can help save lives when an earthquake strikes. 📸 We’re sharing a look at our team in action as we put earthquake safety into practice! Do you know what to do if the ground starts shaking? Drop to your hands and knees, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Preparedness starts with practice. Take a few minutes today to talk with your family about earthquake safety and make sure everyone knows what to do! #GreatShakeOut

🌪️ MEMA is practicing tornado safety! Today, MEMA staff participated in a tornado safety drill by moving to the lowest floor of the State Emergency Operations Center and sheltering in an interior hallway. We encourage all Mississippians to practice their tornado safety plans, too. Identify your safe place, know where to go, and make sure everyone in your household understands what to do when a tornado warning is issued. Don't wait until severe weather threatens to practice!
