Lopes: "It is one thing to be considered risky. It is quite another to be persistently mispriced. For decades, African economies have been assessed through risk frameworks that only partially capture their realities. The consequence has not simply been analytical distortion – it has been a material cost to development." businessdailyafrica.com/bd/o…

In this third article in the 5-part series Building Shared Prosperity in South Africa, Brian Levy and Alan Hirsch unpack Jobs and the Informal Sector. They discuss why South Africas informal economy remains unusually small and how reforms that support informal enterprises, alongside broader economic growth, could create more jobs and help address the countrys unemployment crisis. Building shared prosperity in South Africa requires an economy that creates jobs, supports entrepreneurship and expands opportunities for participation in economic growth. The New South Institute has launched a new five-part blog series, Building Shared Prosperity in South Africa, which considers the policy choices and institutional reforms needed to address unemployment and support more inclusive economic growth. Co-author @AlanHirsch2 joined Jeremy Maggs on Hot Business on @Hot1027FM to discuss the series and the challenges facing South Africa's economy. Alan outlined three complementary priorities: accelerating formal sector growth, creating a more supportive environment for small and informal businesses, and harnessing information and communication technologies to improve productivity and expand economic opportunities. The discussion also considered the importance of effective governance, entrepreneurship and cooperation between government and business in creating the conditions for shared prosperity. The Nelson Mandela Foundation congratulates Navanethem Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Pillay has spent decades advancing justice, accountability and the protection of human rights. Her career includes defending those who stood against apartheid, serving as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her recognition is a significant moment for South Africa and for the broader struggle for justice and human dignity. Her lifelong commitment to these principles reflects the values Nelson Mandela championed and the work that remains necessary to realise a more just world. We congratulate Navi Pillay on this honour and recognise a lifetime of work in pursuit of justice.
