Lately I've been thinking a lot about 'reimagining' in opera productions. It is the word of the year, but oddly it's only used by those who claim to be doing the reimagining. Synonyms: meddling, tinkering, fiddling, showing off, misunderstanding, betraying, indulging (oneself).

Been plundering my new Hilliard Ensemble set and this 1990 beauty moved me greatly. These English composers from the 1400s, many of them simply billed as 'anon', created exquisite music that's survived for 600+ yrs - long after their own lives. They could never have imagined.

Dear Andy @andyburnham, you are not rerunning the Brexit argument, you now have 10 yrs of evidence of the damage done by Brexit. Take every opportunity to expose the damage done, the likes of Farage @Nigel_Farage, Badenoch @KemiBadenoch & Jenrick @RobertJenrick have no argument

Tonight it's Tosca at @E_N_O, directed by Annilese Miskimmon and conducted by Ben Glassberg. A good move to mount this new production. I wasn't much taken (to say the least) with the short-lived staging it's replacing. I'll be reviewing for @operamagazine

This version of Martin Guerre deserves to be definitive. 90 concentrated minutes of clear, pacy storytelling, beautifully staged and sung. Fantastic tension and drama. It improves in every way on earlier versions.

gothicopera.co.uk/production… Another repertoire coup for Gothic Opera. I'm looking forward to seeing Halévy's forgotten version of La Dame de pique on Thursday evening!

My fondest memory of the great Stephen Kovacevich dates from 2022, a blissful recital of Berg, Brahms and Beethoven (Op. 109 and 110) in the Darius Milhaud Conservatoire at the Aix Easter Festival. A wonderful pianist whose artistry has enriched my life in audiences. RIP

Tomorrow, when you see the front pages of the right-wing press telling you how dreadful the budget was, remember their track record. Also remember that right-wingers won’t ever be happy with any budget that doesn’t push down on those at the bottom to benefit those at the top.

I've often wondered where @susanhillwriter found those deliciously aromatic names in The Woman in Black. I think I've discovered one by myself. Reserching a job I'm doing I read about the Pendle Witch Trial - and there was... Jennet. Not Jennet Humfrye, but it's a start.

It’s a pretty good day waking up in Norway, knowing Trump hates us and that we have universal healthcare, clean water, free higher education AND Erling Haaland 🙂‍↕️

It's a good job Suella Braverman claimed £45,000 for water bills on her parliamentary expenses. If she had failed to declare a ten quid overpayment on Universal Credit, she'd have been in serious trouble then.
