French Catch gifs. Notepad essays. Minimalism. Treats this place like a message board. segundacaida.blogspot.com piped.video/mattd2a

When we watched the French Catch uncovered in 2020, I tried to capture gifs of unique holds, sequences, and character bits. I began posting them too early into this account so some are flagged, but if you start with the one below you can scroll back and forward to see/share them.

Gilbert Leduc vs Michel Chasine next (JIP: 9/20/57). Electric finishing stretch. Power bombs somehow disappeared from the world in the 70s and only reappeared in the late 80s, as if the NWA brokered some sort of deproliferation accord that ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

French Catch 1959 GIF Thread: As we locked into chronological watching of the footage around '59, I'm going to try to do one thread per year. First we have the hard headed Jose Tarres, one of the great Spanish draws, vs Dr. Adolf Kaiser, who here does a 1959 Full Nelson Slam.

Roger Delaporte had basically one move and it was this. He won with it quite a bit and the fans hated it every time.

I lead with an Orson Welles quote, write my once-a-year paragraph about the Bucks and my once-every-four-months love letter to the Pure Rules division. Just another Monday around here.

You'll be glad to know that this Devil Masami move from 1984 not only finished the fall but also took Omori completely out of the match.

Look at the way Mimi Hagiwara sets up this pile driver. I've never seen it done quite like this and it's amazing.

I'd argue that Mark Davis is one of the most exciting wrestlers to watch this year. He has a way of being imaginative with his violence not to force memorable, gif-able spots that pop people, but to create the effect of leaning into his strength to opportunistically cause harm.

You can't say that the French don't appreciate a public execution.

RIP to Johnny Barrett/Jumbo Baretta. This is a guy who could go into the Newborn UWF, hit the mat hard, slug it out, and go way over the top but still have it feel credible and believable in a shoot style setting. It worked because he made it work, because he was fully committed.
I interviewed Jumbo for my book about the Malenko family. He'd really been through the wringer the last few years. Really interesting and talented guy. His true passion was singing and dancing! Loved his run in various UWF promotions in the late 80s and 90s. RIP

The most powerful and meaningful thing a pro wrestling crowd can do is to answer a babyface in need when he shows his heart and lets himself ask for their help. No amount of showing insider smartness or knowledge or can ever be more beautiful or impactful than that.

I'd say "Steal this Finisher" but who among you is Big Bully Busick? (Sound on for some great Heenan/Monsoon banter too).

As we're going through Big Daddy matches, this is one of the biggest takeaways I have had so far on just what he did in-ring to be so successful. I think it's meaningful and I think it mattered.
Another week, another Big Daddy match. This time, with arm-wrestling shenanigans against the future Kamala, Mississippi Mauler Jim Harris. Lot to see here, including how Daddy's act transferred to tangential pro wrestling bs and me referencing Doctor Who. segundacaida.blogspot.com/20…

The weird thing about Ric Flair discussion is that everyone hones in on 89 because it serves as an easy focal point when his footage is so much more interesting and varied in, let’s say, 84. People just gravitate to JCP/NWA/WCW because it’s easier, more familiar, and “canonical.”

The start of Stan Hansen vs Giant Baba from 84. Hansen creates chaos. Baba refuses to yield. Listen to the crowd hang on every shot. Nothing feels quite like this. There's force and reaction to all of it but it's so stylized and unique. Singular, special.

One of the most striking pro wrestling visuals of the decade, symbolizing the violent, visceral danger Jon Moxley was in as he finally hit bottom.
