Lot this morning about Reform's "vetting". When some of the most senior figures embrace Ethno-Nationalism, advocate machine gunning refugee boats and subject Kemi Badenoch to vile racial slurs, what does vetting really mean. What's Reform's decency threshold actually meant to be.

That’s bleakly funny. Very few stand up but their numbers are eventually supplemented when he comes on to recipients of the state pension - which is, I need hardly state, a welfare benefit. Reform is not a party of strivers & wealth creators.

After nearly 2 full decades in war journalism, I admit that it does depress me that of the many opinions I hold, the one that drives the most abuse, is the belief that I want both Jews and Arabs to live safely, securely & prosperously as neighbours & friends in the Middle East.

This is a big deal. Cllrs might lose their positions, and it throws local government budget processes into difficulty. But its the right principled stand. Green Councillors must make a choice, mainstream politics or crankery. Cannot have both.
BREAKING: The Labour Party has said that power-sharing agreements with the Green Party will end unless local Greens explicitly reject their party's "Zionism is racism" policy The Labour Party has asked all Labour groups in power-sharing agreements with the Green Party to review their arrangements in local government after the prime minister's words at PMQs yesterday. Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, said: “The Prime Minister has been completely clear: this policy is wrong and antisemitic, and has no place in British politics. “Where local Labour Parties currently have an arrangement with the Greens in local government, we expect their Green counterparts to make clear that they reject this position and to call on their national leadership to reconsider the policy. “We have asked local Green groups to respond as a matter of urgency. Where they are unable to provide that assurance, Labour will bring any such local arrangement to an end. This isn’t an issue of party politics; it’s about doing what is right and upholding the values anyone holding public office should share. “The Labour Party fought hard to address antisemitism within our own party and ensure it had no place in our politics. We have a responsibility to uphold those same standards in our relationships with other parties.”

This is absolutely right - Rooney's critics hide behind legal/state based arguments because they don't want to face the free expression problems she has raised Free speech is for everyone - not just your friends/colleagues/heroes
Many on the right dismiss the Sally Rooney case as a free speech issue because she “broke the law by supporting/funding Palestine Action, a proscribed group”. Funny the same argument was not made in relation to, say, Lucy Connolly who also “broke the law” (and pleaded guilty). 1/

Andy Burnham just called the Zionism is Racism motion in the Green Party “antisemitic” and clarified that Labour won’t partner with them while it stands. It’s good to hear this said clearly in the House of Commons. I hope that trickles down to the local councils too.

I agree, and think people on this site have got this wrong. This is England - we do not ban books!
in my original post about the Sally Rooney affair I have been accused of oversimplifying what has happened. And that's fair - I did. But after going into this in more depth I realise that we end up in much the same place - books not on sale to the UK public because of the entirely unrelated activities of their author. After all who is to know whether the proceeds from books that would have been sold would actually be the money to be be donated to Palestine Action as opposed to money that Rooney has already made or is making elsewhere? Rooney btw, with scant regard for her readers, seems not to be unhappy for this to happen. I don't imagine that the government anticipated this outcome when it produced the ban and I'm not at all sure that Faber shouldn't have taken the risk of a prosecution that probably would never have happened. The result is the same - books not available for political reasons.

Trump extorted Ukraine in 2019 in a dirty scheme to win re-election in 2020. He is extorting Ukraine again in a dirty scheme to sway midterms in 2026. The first scheme failed. This second will fail too. But why must brave Ukrainians lose their lives for Trump's corruption?
