I made a 1m wingspan flying wing RC airplane that prints in a single Form 4L build in just a few parts. Print-in-place, flexural control surfaces for improved aerodynamics and reduced assembly. It actually survived 2 flights! 3rd one ended because of an unfortunately placed fence... Is this useful for anything?

One of the most important pieces of "market research" I did for the Form Studio was asking Formerlings what they would pay to have a Form 4 at home. 5 out of 5 said "up to $1000”
paying back the ol’ employer 💅

That's a great idea. Good fit for SLA to print fluid lines/manifolds for gas. Maybe using a small co2 cylinder for the gas source. Not sure how to do the valves... If anyone can make a half decent design for this, we will give them a Form Studio 1.
Serious question: could this be done at a smaller scale? Meaning, could an STL be 3d printed and then this propulsion system be used for an RC version?

I'm lucky enough to have spent time with both of those wise engineers. Here are two of the next generation. If you recognize them consider joining @formlabs

The Jog-01 is a portable stepper motor jogger / pendant. It lets you switch between different modes and fine-tune parameters such as speed, acceleration, distance, repeated cycles, and more. Want one? Should we open source it? Designed by Henry Chan, Micronics cofounder. He is hard at work cooking up some great products at Formlabs and building fun stuff like this on the side.

What is everyone using to view the output of their AI CAD experiments if you aren't building in an existing CAD tool (AI using lower level libraries, writing out meshes, etc directly)? Good viewing, sectioning, measuring, etc

The PTC sale is going to look really smart in a couple of months when AI 3D design gets some mainstream awareness and CAD stocks tank. It will take a little while before AI really impacts their sales, but it will. I'd be surprised if 2 out of the 4 major CAD companies are not mostly dead in 5 years.

The progress in AI CAD in 8 months has been insane. Who has the best demo now? (See original post for requirements).
What is the most impressive demo of AI 3D mechanical design that you've seen? By "AI 3D mechanical design", I mean something that 1. allows you to use an interface much simpler than typical 3D CAD -- text, sketching, 2d image etc -- 2. is reasonably general purpose (not just a configurator) 3. produces designs that can be manufactured and have some kind of function beyond just their appearance

This weekend, I had Astra CAD most of a single part printed fixed wing drone. A world's first, as far as I know. Doesn't meet the criteria yet because it's not really manufacturable, but I am pretty sure I will have it flying soon.

One thing that has surprised me is how little the CAD tool it's using seems to matter. I've worked with LLM + Fusion, CadQuery, or just JS/Python with lower level libraries generating meshes directly and all of the seem to work ok. Though I suspect the ideal combo is still yet to emerge. Is it possible we can just bypass BREP and traditional parametric CAD entirely for code + meshes?

I've now made an SLS version of it with the Fuse X1. It's more durable and I also got to put in a few aerodynamic improvements that make it more stable (wing twist, reflex airfoil). Flight footage coming soon!
A while ago, I designed a 1 m wingspan flying wing RC airplane that prints in just a few parts in a single Form 4L build. It features print-in-place flexure control surfaces for improved aerodynamics and reduced assembly.

Oddly similar to the datacenter chart, but with top spots reversed. USA is dominating bits China is dominating atoms
