Aileen Wuornos (Florida, 1989β90)
Convicted of 6, tied to 7. Targeted men who picked her up while she worked as a sex worker along highways. Tactics were direct and opportunistic: she controlled the encounter once the car stopped. Not the classic caregiver pattern; she reads closer to the male stranger script.
Mental/ Psychological state: borderline and antisocial personality disorder, PCL-R score around 32. Heavy childhood trauma (abuse, rape, pregnancy at 13β14, abandoned). Driven psychopathy more than pure cold-blooded wiring. Impulsive, canny, and self-destructive.
Emotional state : rage, paranoia, shame that flipped into βthey were going to hurt me.β
Physical state: hard living, alcohol, street wear.
Symbolism: none formal;
Her claim was self-defense.
She asked the court to stop appeals and execute her. It was fast tracked, rather than go through most of the cases and drag her death sentence. βHow many times do they wanna kill me? β , she said.
Trial discrepancy:
Richard Mallory (victim of Aileen) case. Mallory served ten years in Marylandβs Patuxent Institution after a 1957 attempted-rape conviction. Records diagnosed him as a βdefective delinquentβ with a schizoid personality and an βextremely strong sex urge.β Detectives told the court there was no evidence backing Wuornosβs claim that Mallory was violent toward women β but they hadnβt searched federal records, which would have surfaced it. Dateline reporter Michele Gillen found the file in November 1992, months after conviction. The trial judge refused to admit it post-trial. Wuornosβs appeals cited ineffective counsel for missing it; courts rejected that.
