Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin is helping pave the way for new approaches to fighting cancer. MCW researcher Jeffrey Medin, PhD, is part of the team behind Tundra Targeted Therapeutics, a Milwaukee-based startup developing a targeted antibody therapy designed to help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. The approach aims to offer a new option for cancers that no longer respond to existing treatments, potentially with fewer side effects. The therapy builds on years of academic research conducted at MCW in collaboration with researchers at the University of Virginia. Now, it’s advancing to Phase 1 clinical trials in Milwaukee, bringing research closer to its potential impact on patients.

For years, medical treatments have been designed to serve most people. But our genetic makeup offers the key to unlock a deeper understanding of what will work best for each individual patient. This is what inspires Marni J. Falk, MD, the new leader at the helm of the Linda T. and John A. Mellowes Institute for Genomic Medicine and Precision Therapeutics. “I’m honored to join MCW, a pioneer in using genomic sequencing to identify and treat disease, and I’m grateful to the Mellowes family for investing in a future where more people can benefit from this personalized approach to care," Dr. Falk says. A nationally and internationally recognized leader in genomic medicine, mitochondrial disease, and precision therapeutics, Dr. Falk has built and led pioneering clinical and research programs that have advanced the diagnosis and treatment of rare genetic diseases. Today marks the next chapter in MCW's vision of becoming a destination for health. Delivering world-class precision care and medical education grounded in genomics and data science is a key component of this bold vision and reflects our long history as a pioneer in this evolving field. In 2009, MCW and clinicians from Children's Wisconsin became the first in the world to successfully treat a patient by sequencing their genome. In the years since, MCW’s Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine has driven translational research that now powers first-in-human clinical trials at Children's Wisconsin and Froedtert Hospital, serving as the nexus for our shared vision of advancing genomic medicine and precision therapeutics. The Mellowes family's latest investment empowers MCW to lead a collaborative effort to make patient-centered, lifelong, personalized care the standard for everyone, starting with universal genome sequencing.

Today, we celebrate a groundbreaking act of generosity that will transform the future of medicine at MCW and beyond. We extend our deepest gratitude to Linda T. and John A. Mellowes and the Charter Manufacturing Foundation for their historic $50 million gift – the largest investment ever made in precision medicine at MCW. In recognition of this landmark gift, MCW’s Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine will be elevated to the MCW Linda T. and John A. Mellowes Institute for Genomic Medicine and Precision Therapeutics. The Hub for Collaborative Medicine, the vital collaborative space on MCW’s Milwaukee campus, will also be renamed as the Linda T. and John A. Mellowes Health Innovation Center. The Mellowes’ gift reflects progress toward becoming a nationally and internationally recognized collaborative for genomic medicine and precision therapeutics, which aims to tailor treatments to a person’s unique genetic makeup. Through this support, MCW, along with our partners at @childrenswi and @Froedtert, can think bigger and bolder in pursuit of a future where personalized care is the standard for everyone at all stages of life.
