Community engagement for Android @ Google

United States
Hello from Google 😁! After over 10 years writing about @Android, I'm SO excited to finally be ... working for Android! Just as exciting is that my role includes community engagement, so I'll still be connected to the Android community I love and hope to help people learn to ♥️ Android as much as I do. How am I gonna do that? You'll be hearing much more from me in the near future about these efforts, so stay tuned!

📣 Mobile scams are getting way more sophisticated, from spoofed numbers and fake bank alerts to advanced voice cloning. To help keep users safe, we're rolling out a new set of scam defense capabilities on @Android: * Opt-in enhanced protection mode in Google Messages * Scam alerts in chat notifications on more phones * Automatic screen-share privacy in Chrome & WebView * Proactive call-forwarding protection Here's a breakdown of what's new 🧵

📊 These features make a difference: in a recent Google/YouGov survey of 4,500 smartphone users, iPhone users were significantly more likely than Pixel users to tell us they've fallen victim to a scam (87% more likely via texts, 83% via calls) & 2x more likely to say their phone was "not effective at all" at protecting them from scams. Does this match with your own experience?

🌍The Android Earthquake Alerts System is one of those features that still feels like pure🪄magic to me. Like what do you mean the tiny slab in your pocket can detect earthquakes? Fundamentally, it isn't super complicated to understand: nearly every Android phone has an accelerometer that detects motion. By training a model to recognize signature vibration patterns and leveraging crowdsourced data from many Android phones in the vicinity, the system can confirm an earthquake is happening, calculate the epicenter, and estimate the magnitude.🤯 It’s an incredibly cool use of tech, and I'm so happy we're expanding it to more regions. Hopefully, it gives even more people those few crucial extra seconds to protect themselves.
Earthquakes cause so much destruction and tragedy, and hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake prone regions. We wanted to find a way for technology to help in any way possible, so we built the Android Earthquake Alerts System in 2021. It enables early warnings at scale, and we’ve now sent more than 1 billion alerts. Today, we’re expanding the network from 98 to more than 200 regions and improving our Be Ready alert to quickly give you additional info. Thanks to our Android safety team for driving this innovation. Learn more: blog.google/products-and-pla…

👀IMO this is gonna be huge: Google Play is making it easier to install (& soon share) your own🛠vibe coded Android apps! I've used @GoogleAIStudio to make a few apps, mostly for work-related demos, but I know a lot of folks have been using it to experiment with making highly personalized apps. Installing & sharing those apps has been a bit of a pain, though, which is why I think surfacing them in Google Play under your own private, personal app library is a great idea. And making those apps eventually shareable with just your friends & family is also neat.

I also used AI Studio to make the game seen in my "foldable gaming mode" post a few months back.
🎮 Here’s a sneak peek at foldable gaming mode in the Android 17 platform release! Foldable gaming mode splits the screen 50:50 to give you a full, unobstructed game view on top & a dedicated virtual gamepad below. Check out the post👇for an early look teddit.net/r/AndroidGaming/c…

💻Really excited to see how developers use the new Terminal app on their Googlebook! While this initial preview is aimed at supporting agentic development, the team is looking at expanding the Terminal's capabilities with features like Linux GUI app support in the app launcher & GPU/NPU hardware acceleration! I'm especially excited for GPU/NPU acceleration. I think that'll unlock some fun capabilities 👀
