🏆 Oral Abstract Award Winner — ASPC Congress on CVD Prevention
Meet Dr. Mohan Satish, Clinical Cardiovascular & T-32 Postdoctoral Fellow at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medicine — Friday's Oral Abstract winner!
His research asks a critical question: do the 2023 PREVENT equations actually work for American Indians?
American Indians carry a disproportionate burden of cardiometabolic risk — especially diabetes and tobacco use — yet were left out of the PREVENT equations' derivation and validation cohorts, often folded into an undefined "other" category.
Using the Strong Heart Study — a landmark cohort of 6,000+ American Indians followed since 1989 — Dr. Satish found that PREVENT equations do perform well in this population. That's a big deal: it means current lipid, hypertension, and CKM guidelines are applicable here too.
But there's more work ahead: ~13% of participants couldn't obtain a PREVENT score due to out-of-range values (such as BMI over 40) — a calibration gap they are now working to close.
Congratulations, Dr. Satish, on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

Are young adults at higher risk for heart attacks than we thought?
A new analysis of ~1M hospitalizations found mortality rising between 2011–2022, with women facing greater risk than men. @MohanSatishMD@wenzl_florianahajrnls.org/46CXbNw
Not good, not what we should expect:
"the significant increase in overall in‐hospital mortality with first STEMI [large heart attack] was driven largely by increases in young men" over the past decaade
