when I started in crypto in 2017, I had no idea what I was doing.
I threw a few hundred bucks at some random ICOs and somehow turned it into like $30k within half a year. then obviously lost it all when the bubble burst in 2018.
but I was euphoric and completely hooked. and the conclusion I walked away with was as left curve as it was brilliant:
altcoins gud.
so I did the only logical thing. I took out a loan at the end of 2018 and went all in. hit a few small runners in 2019, and founded Moonrock Capital.
decent capital to play with, a brand to invest under, and a strong left curve thesis. I was perfectly positioned for what came next:
the biggest bull run in crypto history. I turned a mid 5-figure personal portfolio into a mid 8-figure one for Moonrock.
but here's the interesting part:
the exact left curve approach that made me didn't evolve with me. I slowly turned into a textbook mid curvoor.
it started with NFTs I never fully understood and hence just lost money on them. then when memecoin mania exploded, I refused to touch it and just hated from the sidelines. after living through FTX, Luna and every other blow up, the PTSD made it almost impossible to believe in anything again, especially something that looked that stupid.
I don't regret it, and in hindsight I was mostly right. but I still left a lot of money on the table. what it did give me was time to think. about what comes next, and what kind of investor I actually want to be.
because here's what I realized: all the catalysts we kept waiting for, the pro-crypto president, the ETFs, the institutional flows, none of them moved the needle the way everyone promised.
and the reason is simple. the days of trading purely on narratives and speculation are over. it was fun while it lasted, but valuations got too outrageous to be justified by vibes alone. at some point you actually have to step up and deliver.
the casino will always exist in some form. but I'm convinced it keeps shrinking until it's just a small side niche. and that's completely fine.
look at Hyperliquid, PumpFun, Collector Crypt, the entire DeFi ecosystem over the last 1-2 years. the pattern is impossible to miss:
projects that create real value, that people genuinely want to use and pay for, massively outperform the ones that don't.
groundbreaking, I know.
we are finally maturing as an industry. the experimental decade was fun and brought incredible innovation. but the next decade is about noticing which experiments actually worked, and backing them with everything.
left curve made me. mid curve humbled me. who knows whether I am on the right side of the curve now, but I've never been more convinced about what's coming:
the longest and most rewarding cycle crypto has ever seen.
the Golden Age of Onchain Businesses.
