President Trump says the giant new data centers going up around the country will have to make their own electricity instead of leaning on the same grid that powers our homes. In a Truth Social post early Wednesday, he wrote that new large data centers are mandated by him to produce their own power and give or sell any excess back to the local community or grid, and he said that could mean a substantial decrease in electric prices instead of an increase. He also told the companies that if they want their projects to be popular, they should pay the community or the people who live there a dividend. This builds on a pledge Trump got the big tech companies to sign earlier this year to cover their own power. So far it has come in a social media post, and I haven't seen a signed order yet. That matters, because data centers have turned into one of the hottest local issues of this election, with public opposition growing and several states considering moratoriums. I'm all for America winning the AI race, but not on the backs of families and retirees who are already paying more every month to keep the lights on. If these companies want to build, they should bring their own power and leave our bills alone. Making them do that is the right call, and I hope it gets put in writing.
