“Our most fundamental obligation as scientists is to see the world as it is, not as we wish it to be.” I spoke to The Confluence, an international student journal, about the feeling of discovery and why scientists must share their discoveries: the-confluence.org/articles/…

Bill Nordhaus was an extraordinary man. A terrific scientist. A fabulous professor. And a friend of mine. We taught a class together five years ago on global catastrophes and it was such a pleasure. I’m very saddened by this loss. news.yale.edu/2026/10/31/wil…

Human social interactions are distributed across many kinds of social relationships: economic and health-related connections, kinship, friendship. And behavioral social allocation and social appeal are not the same. New #HNL work on network multiplexity in @PNASNews

Human social networks are organized around a small number of stable, well-defined functional roles that distinguish how individuals allocate social effort from their social appeal to others. These patterns can be obscured in conventional network representations. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.26…

In aggregate, the introduction of a new information regime acted as a kind of social institution, rewiring individuals’ connections even though the overall degree distribution of village-wide networks remained relatively stable. nature.com/articles/s41586-0… 11/

We demonstrate that social contagion could be experimentally induced to two degrees of separation— that is, upon a person’s friends’ friends. This experimental result comports with much prior observational and experimental work of ours on social contagion (e.g., 2007 obesity study nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE… & 2010 altruism experiment pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.09… & 2015 altruism experiment nature.com/articles/nature15…).

We investigated the possible transformative effects of exogenous education interventions on social interactions in traditional village settings with a randomized trial, examining the connections that individuals keep, drop, or form, as well as the overall structure of village-wide networks that might arise. nature.com/articles/s41586-0… 3/

Countless development economics and public health interventions are delivered all the time in locations around the world. Our research indicates that these interventions may be inadvertently inducing changes in who is connected to whom, in ways that might either harm or benefit local populations. 2/
