Christmas.
This is the reason I’ve not had a happy Christmas ever since he passed. (Search Christmas on my profile if you’re in doubt…)
I’m a dialectical thinker, just like my dad and I argue for the fun of it, just like my dad… and both of us never ran out of curveballs. And both of us are well read - myself because he hounded me.😏
Now, imagine an immovable force meeting an immovable object…
Our Christmas ritual was stumbling into topics with grey areas and debating ourselves to a point of exhaustion and anger, and then both of us agreeing to disagree because it’d stretched for hours and we needed to rest before church the next day.😂
Once we start like this, my mum will just retire for the night because she won’t want to get caught in the crossfire, “what do you think??”
I can vividly remember us retiring from the balcony after hours of back and forth, to the bedroom… him suddenly remembering a point he didn’t raise earlier and blurting it out… me catching the ball and continuing my plea… AND my mum waking up and begging both of us to let her sleep.😂
I was -15, he was +40 and sometimes he’d pull the age card — one thing- one thing “do you think you know more than your father???”, but ehnn??? You no know who you born??? Get down sir!
The main reason he was so convinced I’d make a good lawyer and insisted I toed that path. But baba mi, nah film I wan doooo!!😂 That was another long argument we had, by the way.
Every time I make a big stride as a creative, I wonder what he’d have thought about it, because the last argument we had, he insisted artists are “hooligans”, and I assured him that, that art is what I’ll do.
Would he have been proud? Would he have found more curveballs? Would we have celebrated or would he have just found another “but”… I guess we’ll never know.
Good times mehn!😅
I miss him!
What did you and your dad bond over when you were a kid?
