German intervention'? Are you referencing the 12th century? Prior decline doesn't absolve the USSR of destroying it completely. When a language becomes vulnerable, it needs preservation -not Soviet destruction under the excuse that 'others started it.

The last native speaker died in 2013 in Canada as a refugee because her family fled Soviet terror and deportations.
Thank goodness the Soviets saved the language by forcing its last speakers to escape to the West to survive.

Collectivization, boarding schools, and cultural erasure were the problem. And yes, I can name suc a language: Livonian. The USSR destroyed their traditional way of life, leading directly to the extinction of the language.

The "poor Russian conscripts" are actually, in the overwhelming majority, not conscripts at all, but people who go to war to murder Ukrainians for money.
"They have no choice" - what bullshit. Going to jail instead of bombing a playground full of children is a choice. Emigration is a choice. Defecting is a choice. When you are given a rifle and told to go murder Ukrainian civilians, you actually can choose which way to shoot.
But they almost always choose to kill Ukrainians because it's easier, it's within their comfort zone. Almost always, except for the few who shattered the "no choice" narrative to pieces.
