… With all the recent changes here, my 15-year Twitter anniversary seems as good a time as any to start consciously shifting more of my energy elsewhere.
I’m not going scorched-earth and abandoning Twitter, but Mastodon has been a nice change of scenery:

The new website for Typographics 2023 is now live, with a schedule overview, early-bird conference registration, and more:
2023.typographics.com
More details and events will be announced soon so keep an eye here for updates.

Question for the CSS wizards out there:
Is there a way to use CSS grid (or any pure CSS technique, really) to force the height of an element to snap to multiples of a number *based on the content*?
This post describes basically what I want:

That feeling when someone you respect announces a shift away from Twitter in favor of Mastodon, and when you go to follow their account there you realize … you already do. 😎
The number of people I enjoyed following on Twitter who haven’t moved to Mastodon grows smaller daily.
Wow, Twitter is devolving fast.
Over at @FontsInUse we have this message pinned on our profile. But now Twitter is hiding the tweet because it refers/links to another social network they appear to be actively blocking references to.
So much for the whole free speech thing, huh?
ALT Screen shot of a tweet from @FontsInUse announcing a change of focus to another microblogging social media platform.
… And now if you try to follow links to pages on the other social network (like the one on the @FontsInUse profile), Twitter interrupts with scare tactics to discourage you from actually following the link.
ALT Twitter warning claiming that a link to another social network may be somehow harmful or dangerous, showing a giant button to return to Twitter above a small link to ignore the warning and continue.
… Twitter discouraging and outright blocking links to another social network is an excellent case for the other social network.

At the risk of appearing even geekier, if it’s possible, h/t to typeface aficionado @NickSherman, who posted the “stilted W” cover on Flickr back in 2011. Found it when I researched NOLA covers before I went there and was determined to see it for myself! flic.kr/p/a4sYhP
To coax people over to Mastodon I’ve been posting lots of fun stuff there: old books, custom type by Armin Hofmann & @pentagram, posters from @cghnyc, gravestones with some of the earliest sans-serif English-language lettering I know, etc.
Come on over:

The talk I gave about all things Franklin Gothic for @coopertype & @lubalincenter last month has be re-edited to restore some parts that were dropped in the livestream and subsequent recording. The new edit also includes high-res/full-screen slide images.

Ah yes, the ornate serifs and ball terminals of Helvetica, made with hand and brush, promoted lovingly by the PR team at Monotype and rigorously verified by the editors at Print.

Here’s a little info about the third-party cookies on fontsinuse.com:
There are none.
Last year, as our team discussed GDPR conformity, we agreed it was easier and better to drop any need for cookies than to have an opt-in popup.

A new issue of one of my favorite design publications is now available for order.
If anyone in the NYC area wants to combine orders for reduced shipping costs / carbon emissions, send me a DM or email in the next 24 hours.
… Y’know what other web platform I’ve been using consistently for well over 15 years to keep up with stuff I like, which isn’t beholden to any corporate control?
RSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s astounding to me that there hasn’t been a seismic resurgent interest in RSS recently.
… Seriously, if you aren’t an active RSS user, I strongly suggest giving it a(nother) try.
I like @NetNewsWire’s (free!) apps for reading RSS feeds, with a service like @feedbin or iCloud to keep the desktop & mobile feeds synced. But most RSS readers/services are pretty good.
