“These races are all as tight as they can be, a jump ball, if you will, so it’s all going to come down to turnout,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune tells me in final #midterms sprint. “I think we have as good a chance as not of hanging onto the majority in the Senate.” @CBSNews

Asked by @NikolenDC about the prospects for peace in Ukraine following talks in Oslo, President Trump urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reach a deal with Russia. “Ukraine has to want to settle this war. Zelenskyy has to want to settle this war. And if he doesn't, I think it's going to be a very bad thing,” Trump said. “Look, we have given tremendous amounts to Ukraine. We've gotten nothing back other than high diesel.” Trump said the hatred between Zelenskyy and Putin is “tremendous” and the reason they haven’t been able to make a deal.

“Whoops,” Sen. Cornyn tells me on #Paxton leaked audio.”He hasn't led in any public poll, and he released his internal poll, which I thought was very odd, which shows him down. But the president's own pollster shows him down four, and so I think it's a tough environment period.”
NEW: NY Times reports in leaked audio it obtained, Ken Paxton told donors his poll numbers dropped after RNC convention in Dallas. “So to be honest with you, the numbers when we did that convention it dropped our numbers. Everybody’s numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good..”

“I think we’re at risk,” Cornyn warned and told me he doesn’t believe his numbers would be dropping if he were the GOP nominee. “I don't quite have all the baggage," he said and has no plans to campaign this fall with #Paxton, who defeated him in the Senate primary.

Today’s action revoking access for journalists from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW violates the First Amendment. The implications extend beyond these organizations: a standard used to exclude one news outlet because of its coverage could be applied to any outlet in the future. The American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to scrutinize those elected to power, regardless of whether government officials view it favorably.  That’s why courts have repeatedly held that once the White House provides access to journalists, it cannot deny that access arbitrarily or based on the content of their reporting. The WHCA calls on the administration to immediately restore our colleagues' access. - Jacqui Heinrich, WHCA President

A new visitor education center at the Pentagon will help tell the stories of the 184 people killed there on Sept. 11, 2001, along with the families, first responders and others affected by the attack. Ground is being broken this weekend on the center, which is expected to open in 2029 near the existing Pentagon Memorial. CBS News’ @NikolenDC reports on the effort to preserve those stories for future generations.

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton says that if elected governor, he wants to "put the weight of the state behind" a cell phone policy in which parents pledge not to buy their children smartphones until eighth grade. "I'm a parent, and the problem is that there's this issue of peer pressure," he says. "Most parents actually don't want their kids to have smartphones, especially at a really early age. But there's this peer pressure...So we invite every parent through the school to make a pledge voluntarily — not a ban — but voluntarily say, 'We're not going to give our kids smartphones until eighth grade.'"
