Over the three days, participants are examining the Treaty of Tlatelolco, the wider international disarmament and non-proliferation framework, peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and the role of gender and youth in disarmament. During their time in Kingston, they will also visit the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) at the University of the West Indies, Mona, to learn first-hand about the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology in Jamaica. 2/2

Jamaica is hosting the 15th edition of the OPANAL Course on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, in partnership with the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL). This is the first time the three-day course is being staged in the Caribbean, bringing together diplomats, government officials, and other professionals to strengthen regional expertise. At this morning’s opening ceremony, Foreign Minister Senator the Honourable @kaminajsmith reaffirmed Jamaica’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and its rejection of the doctrine of nuclear deterrence. “No country, regardless of size or geographic location, would be spared the catastrophic and devastating impact of a military confrontation involving the use of these weapons,” the Minister said. 1/2

Fue un honor presidir el Consejo del @OPANAL en su nueva sede. Este organismo, con sede en CDMX, vela por el cumplimiento del #TratadoDeTlatelolco que prohíbe las armas nucleares en América Latina y el Caribe. México continúa fortaleciendo la zona libre de armas nucleares en nuestra región, en especial, en vísperas del 60° Aniversario del #TratadoDeTlatelolco en 2027.

En día internacional para eliminación total de armas nucleares, México 🇲🇽 a nombre de los estados miembros @OPANAL, reafirmó compromiso histórico de nuestra región con el desarme nuclear, general y completo, verificable e irreversible, y con un mundo libre de armas nucleares 🕊☮️
