Lynn Margulis proposed a theory of symbiogenesis--life evolves through organisms merging together to become inseparable-cooperation not just competition drives great leaps. In 1967, her theory was written off as not compelling. It is common knowledge today.yahoo.com/news/science/artic…

Avian flu death is a reminder of how important the seasonal work of @CDCFlu is to monitor virus and prepare for any emerging threats. Condolences to friends and family. In my era this would be something CDC leadership would be communicating about. Let’s see how it goes in this era. yakimacounty.us/2417/Media-R…

In molecular diagnostics, computer hardware is part of the test system under CLIA. Validated pipeline versions have to be tied to the assay that was run; the laboratory director approves code changes before implementation. Some accreditors require FASTQ, BAM, and VCF files for a minimum of 2 years. HIPAA requires audit trails for 6 years. Cloud and instrument vendors that store or transmit genetic information need a written business associate agreement even if they cannot unencrypt the data. Schmidt, @PathByteChic, and colleagues (J Mol Diagn. 2025) map the hardware, software, networks, and interoperability requirements for bioinformatics inside a CLIA laboratory. The article is not legal advice. jmdjournal.org/article/S1525…

In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 wks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. forbes.com/sites/kimelsesser…
