“Put simply, I am here to fight for the Australian people, not fight with them.
Like any workplace, everyone should go home safe every day.
Therefore, we must not leave communities behind and only focus on politicians.
I aspire for every Australian to be safe.
Safe at work. Safe in their homes. Safe in Northbridge. Safe at places of worship. And safe doing politics.
Attacks on our democracy attack us all.
I believe the best way to make our democracy safe is to make our community safe.
I refuse to accept that violent people get to coerce Australia’s democracy.
Coercion that makes people fearful to volunteer. To scare people from putting their hand up.
This week we draw a line, saying that the violence, the hateful notes delivered to our homes, intimidation of staff and volunteers, written abuse and worse must stop.
Because we must not allow this attack to define who we are as a nation.
And we can’t ignore that the overwhelming majority of our nation are kind, compassionate and caring.
I encourage Australians to shine a light of positivity. Celebrate the good in our democracy, including the ability to disagree well.
Of course tell your politicians when we get it wrong, but also tell us when we get it right.”
