Every 6 hours in Scotland, someone dies of a preventable drug related death. We have the worst drug death rate in Europe & without action it will only get worse. That's why I have launched my Bill consultation in @ScotParl to establish Overdose Prevention Centres. Watch 👇👇

There is hope for Scottish industry if we have a Scottish and UK Government willing to prioritise reindustrialisation and back Scottish yards. It can be done and Methil shows how.
Methil no more? Think again. Engineering yard comes back from the dead to show how Scotland can reindustrialise. In The Post. sundaypost.com/fp/rhea-wolfs… via @Sunday_Post

John Swinney has confirmed he doesn't back a full public inquiry into failings in maternity and neonatal care, and says an ongoing review will address the issues. Hundreds of bereaved protestors gathered in Glasgow City Centre on Sunday calling for an inquiry, with thousands having signed a petition. Scottish Labour health spokeswoman Jackie Baillie raised the issue at First Minister's Questions this afternoon.
Protestors are gathering at Buchanan Street Steps this afternoon to demand a public inquiry into failing maternity and neonatal care. It's being spearheaded by a Glasgow family who lost their son at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital due to several systemic issues. The health board has apologised. Almost 5,000 have signed the Mason Matters petition calling for a full public review into the 406 deaths of babies and mothers in the city.

It was great to join @BTP in the Parliament last week. Their Think Again campaign challenges violence against women and girls across our railway networks. 📱You can text 61016 to report any non-emergency incidents.

Both barrels from Fergus Ewing for @transcotland chief who suggested islanders would need ‘mentoring’ before taking on ferry quango board roles they are so excluded from. An attitude “worthy of the Raj in its heyday,” says Ewing. Hard to disagree. Again @Sygazette ✊

"It makes the city look a lot more disorganised, and it makes businesses look kind of dirty." Ottoman Coffeehouse in Glasgow recently had to take to social media to resolve a dispute with a contractor, after weeks worth of rubbish was being left to pile up at their doorstep despite paying hundreds per month for waste collection. They're hopeful it's now been resolved, but director Abubakr Akhtar says that other businesses facing similar issues should speak up to help keep streets clean. This comes as the local authority this week heard a motion on how Glasgow could become one of Europe's cleanest cities, including with community litter challenges and awards for the best participants.

John Healey says something with massive significance for the renewables industry in Scotland, and Nicola Sturgeon then chides him for saying nothing of any significance. Presumably because she lacks the political antennae to understand the significance of what he said. #BBCLauraK

Patrick Stewart spent most of his life hating his father. At 72 he read a medical note from 1940 and had to start the man over from the beginning. He grew up in a two-up two-down in Mirfield, Yorkshire. His father was a regimental sergeant major. The violence at home was aimed at his mother, and police came to the house more than once. Stewart was a boy and could do nothing. He has been a patron of Refuge, the domestic violence charity, for years. "I do what I do in my mother's name, because I couldn't help her then," he says. Then he went looking for his father's war record. At the Imperial War Museum he read the notes. In 1940, after France with the British Expeditionary Force, his father was diagnosed with what was then called severe shell shock. Today it is called PTSD. He was never treated for it. It never left him. A doctor told Stewart that every condition of his childhood he had just described was a textbook symptom of an untreated veteran. In the video below, a woman at a convention asks him what he is most proud of outside acting. He answers with this. He now works for Refuge in his mother's name and for Combat Stress in his father's, and says he does both in equal measure. For 70 years his father was the man who did it. He is now also a man it was done to. Is that an explanation, or an excuse that arrived 70 years too late?

A council leader is not equivalent to a metro mayor. A metro mayor is a directly elected leader of an entire city region, with more extensive executive power and a democratic mandate from across that region. The SNP should support equivalent status and power for Greater Glasgow.

“Tomorrow, he’s in Glasgow to chair an economic council to which English city leaders get an invite, but will shut out the city he’s actually in. “Unlike that closed shop, my door will be open all day. The kettle is on, Andy – pop in.”

This is a good decision - RR are at the top of their game and these projects need to stay in the UK and not go overseas. Big investment in a global market in which RR is one of only four major players. But we need a similar investment in UK-European competitors in frontier tech.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Britain is running 10% fewer trains today than pre-COVID, yet ridership is up by 110%. This means more overcrowding (already bad in 2019) and less choice for passengers. The good thing? We can actually fix this quite quickly. My feature in @RAIL: railmagazine.com/features-la…
