Opioid overdoses are rising in older adults even as other age groups decline, yet MOUD trials often exclude them. Tim Anderson & Tae Woo (Ted) Park earned a NIDA R01 to close that gap. 👏 #PittMed
What does this mean? Larger structural interventions may be needed to mitigate historical and current influences of structural racism on access to lifesaving healthcare for Black and Hispanic patients with OUD.
Dr. Chen's research found patients in more segregated neighborhoods were more likely to get methadone, which requires in-person clinic visits at least weekly, & less likely to get buprenorphine, which can be prescribed in a regular doctor’s visit & picked up at a pharmacy.
In 2020, federal policy changes eased restrictions on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). But Black and Hispanic VA patients saw only small gains overall, so Jessica Chen and her colleagues asked, does where people live play a role?
Did 2020’s federal policy changes close gaps in MOUD care or did they persist? 🤔 Find out at today’s #PittHSRseminar! Dr. Jessica Chen shares findings on how residential segregation shaped methadone vs. buprenorphine access in VA patients.

Congrats to @jgyabes & colleagues on their study of treatment type & mortality in Black & White patients w/ muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Among 2K+ patients, Black patients had higher cancer-specific death risk after cystectomy but not trimodal therapy.

Check out this new editorial co-authored by Tim Anderson on the growing role of phenobarbital in managing inpatient alcohol withdrawal syndrome in @JAMAInternalMed.
💬 Editorial: For hospitalized patients with #AlcoholWithdrawalSyndrome, phenobarbital may be a reasonable alternative to diazepam, with similar length of stay and invasive mechanical ventilation outcomes. ja.ma/4hXvTGy
New research from Tim Anderson: 77% of participants had at least one cardiovascular risk-enhancing factor linked to greater statin use. Findings point to the need for clearer guidance on using REFs to individualize cardiovascular care. #PittMedpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4201…
