At PowerNIL, we're kicking off a new educational series exploring one of the most important conversations in college athletics today, Revenue Sharing vs. NIL. As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve, understanding the difference between revenue sharing and “true” NIL is more important than ever. Throughout this series, we'll break down key distinctions, explore why personal branding still matters, and highlight how student-athletes can position themselves for opportunities both during and beyond their playing careers. We're starting with a fundamental question: Is revenue sharing really NIL? Let's dive in! Revenue sharing provides compensation tied to an athlete's participation in college athletics. “True” NIL is about creating value through an athlete's name, image, likeness, reputation, and personal brand through partnerships with outside businesses and brands. While schools may also use affiliated NIL arrangements to supplement revenue sharing, those arrangements are different from independent, third-party NIL opportunities. Here's the bottom line!
