“I was released today after about four and a half months of detention.” Dr. Mazen al-Rantisi, a 71-year-old physician from Ramallah known across the West Bank as “the doctor of the poor,” speaks with a fresh wound on his face, inflicted half an hour before his release on October 25, 2026. He says a jailer dragged him to the release room handcuffed behind his back, shackled at the legs and blindfolded, then shoved and kicked him to the ground. Israeli occupation forces seized al-Rantisi from his home in the al-Tireh neighbourhood of Ramallah in June without announcing any reason, and his daughter says he lost around 25 kilograms in their prisons. He describes Nafha prison as overrun with scabies, affecting nearly 80 percent of the Palestinian hostages held there, with almost no medicine given. When prisoners beg the passing nurse for treatment, he says, they are cursed at, mocked and ridiculed, and he was taunted for taking the chronic medication a court had ordered he receive. During the famine, thousands of Palestinians would pour out in crowds, running for many kilometers toward locations where tanks and snipers were stationed. The snipers never stopped firing live ammunition directly at the starving people, who were facing death just to obtain a bag of flour. Every day, hundreds of Palestinians were shot by snipers positioned atop tall towers, as if Palestinians had become moving targets for target practice. Despite the extreme danger, Palestinians kept coming in endless streams because they had children dying of hunger in their tents. We will never forget, we will never forgive.

Scenes of my city Beit Hanoun, a city that bears witness to the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza. A city that was once filled with breathtaking green landscapes, with its markets, mosques, streets, hospitals, homes, playgrounds, and the voices of street vendors calling out their goods. Everything has been reduced to ruins, turned into a fragment of nothingness.

I don’t know how to describe the extent of the helplessness and anguish we are experiencing right now. We are not asking for luxury, nor are we even dreaming of a dignified life. We are simply trying to find something to feed our children, while soaring prices consume whatever little ability we have left to keep going. For many days, I have stood helpless in front of more than 18 children of my nephews and nieces. Children whose only fault in this life is that they were born in Gaza. Today, they are being deprived of their most basic rights, to eat when they are hungry and to sleep without being haunted by the fear of going hungry the next day. How painful it is to feel responsible for children, to see their needs right before your eyes, and yet be unable to provide even the simplest necessities for them. How heartbreaking it is to watch their childhood being taken away, not because they lack dreams, but because you can no longer afford to buy food.
